I had the same experience at Chelsea Hotel in Area 10, Abuja.

We arrived Abuja from Port Harcourt after travelling by road for over 10 hours to check into our rooms at the hotel. I think it was about 6-7pm or thereabouts and there was a short queue of about 3 people before we arrived. We were just 2 in our team. Some 2 customers joined the queue behind us and we were all tired with long and drawn faces waiting in line to be allocated rooms as I had already previously booked for our (my team) rooms.

Then it happened. A Whiteman, obviously arriving from the airport came in and joined the queue behind the last person. One of the front office staff at the desk then beckoned on him (the Whiteman) to come to the counter and started attending to him.

Not as if the Hotel has a policy of segregation or whatever. Not as if I am new to the Hotel as I have been staying there for over 4 years each time I am in Abuja and I go to Abuja at least twice in a month with each stay spanning a period of not less than 4 days. In short, the staff already give me preferential treatment most times, while the Management gave me a fat discount on rooms and sends me Chrismas gifts every year. This is to lay a background of how conversant I am with the Hotel, staff and Management.

Back to my story. The Whiteman was already counting his money to pay when I descended on the Hotel Staff. I asked him why he had to single out the Whiteman for preferential treatment when its obvious that we have an organized queue going. I asked him if he (the staff) would be given same treatment if he were to fin himself in New York, Amsterdam, Manchester, etc. I also asked him if the Whiteman is paying more than I was charged and if that be the case, did they charge me like they charged him and I refused to pay? I starting saying something about racism, in my face, in my country, on my soil and the lobby became jam-packed with guests and other staff and I was sure to bring down the roof as I go berserk.

Being an hotel of high standing, the Management staff around had to ask the front office staff to discontinue attending to the white guy and politely asked the Whiteman to rejoin the queue and the Staff that did the discrimination was asked to leave the counter immediately to an adjoining office and normal services resumed.

While my show was going on, especially when I brought in the racism thing, the Whiteman became very sober and apologetic and you could see that he was really sorry as his face fell with remorse and lost some colour. It wasn't his fault anyways as he was jejely on the queue when that sabi sabi staff called him up. I look the man come dey pity am sef.

That night, I had an apology note from the night manager, with a free dinner and a bottle of wine, all on the house. I come dey wish say repeat version go dey dey again and again, make man for dey wack free food and knack am down with free booze...

Exactly the same way a white man would be paid higher than an indigenous staff here in nigeria...our mumu and arse licking in this country knows no bounds....our organizations fall victim to this madness always...we pay our graduates 2 naira, but when a white man comes all in the name of an expert we pay him all kinds of amount of monies you can think of...rubbish.... angry

It's because we believe and know them to be mentally superior to the blacks. And they leverage that advantage. Simple.

Bro, they're superior. Why? You keep proving them right.

You don't have a system. Anything goes here.

Put your house in order. Enforce your laws. Others will comply. Is that too hard to do? For the black man, it's too hard to do.

I would have probably done the same if I was there...# angry #So out of all the the persons waiting in line for their BVN nd apart from the OP, it was only the market woman that summoned the courage to speak her mind and challenge the white man and bank authorities for doing it wrong. I thought they said 'knowledge is power'. We've gone to school, acquired the knowledge, now where's the power undecided #SMH

I won't join others to say "oh nice, fantastic, good " and all , but I will simply say - You've done the black race good.

Weldone for a job well done bro. Some people even on this thread won't mind the treatment since it is not about Maura and Kobo, but some of us care to the bone marrow, despite being a dual citizen of this great nation and a western country and even working and making our living in Nigeria.

You have done what most people will shy away from doing, some of relocated to our dear country because we can't continue to be called British citizen of black origin or black Americans etc

Nice job once again.

I think one of the major problem we are having here is Inferiority complex...
While would they be giving preferential treatment
to a white man here when they do not even give a f**k about us in their own country..

The white man in question might even be a Lebanese sef... grin grin grin
We just have an issue with this people on this colour of skin!one thing I know fOr sure is dat their skin ain't white!if u put a white cloth on oyingbo u'll see the white supersede his skin colour!
And again the kind of treatment giving. To the white folks here in africa is really bad and we should not allow them have that mentality of slavery even in our own soil.
Some of these oyinbo's are cobblers, and other menial jobs but when they come down here,we worship them as God!who even gave us the mentality that they are better!they can't be better than we blacks,if obama can be the president of america then truly a blackman can be better in every way...

What a shame. Its a pity that even after the abolishment of the slave trade, most blacks are still treated as slaves. So, na we cum get the whole day to stand for queue.
the problem is we blacks too... Nw if u read that piece well, u"d observe smth... We blacks tend to see ourselves lesser dan the whites. The white man came in to d bank and d security man escorted him to d bvn lady, smth a security man wouldn't do for a black man. Secondly, most people on d queue kept quiet wen d white man was bein attended to except d market woman... Dat means most blacks allow demselves to be intimidated.

Tuntheycr7:

This morning, as I landed in Lagos, I made to the
nearest GTB to transact. The queue from inside
the banking hall to the bank entrance was crazy.
They are customers who wanna register for their
BVN, I was told. Today is the last day for
registration, they said. I wished them well as I
aligned with the shorter queue for customers
who wanna deposit cash.
Soon, from the BVN queue, a woman began to
scream. The only thing I was able to pick from
the scream, 'se ori meji loni ni? (does he have
two heads?' I stepped out of my queue, to go
and gbeborun, to see what or who was
tormenting this woman. These GTB staff that are
always garbed in white military-like uniform; are
they drivers or security men? About three of
them had just came in with one whiteman. And
they took the whiteman straight to the lady at
the BVN desk. And the lady, too, was already
attending to the whiteman while the queue
watched, and waited, except this woman.
For a moment, I observed things. The woman
screaming against this white supremacy on the
soil of Africa is one local market woman. I
figured through her dressing, the way she tied
her purse around her waist, and when she
lamented that they left their wares to come join
this queue since they heard the exercise was
gonna close today. The men in white and the
whiteman weren't bothered by the woman's
noise. It was a case of allowing the dog bark all
it can till it can bark no more. The people on the
queue were indifferent. Some of them, their
looks carried the undertone, 'shey this woman
wey dey shout want oyinbo to join the queue ni?
Haba!'
I stepped into the circle, calming the woman.
And then, I took the fight from there. I banged
the desk twice, and instantly I got everyone's
attention. How can these men in white bring this
man in and wouldn't tell him to join the queue? I
began. Hey madam, pointing to GTB staff by the
BVN desk, you can only attend to this man when
he joins the queue! Who are you? One of the
idiots in white turned at me. I jega'ed him. I am
a ten year old customer of GTB, I said, with a
brief smile. At this point, everything stood still.
Tell this man to join the queue, I insisted. When
the whiteman's eyes met mine, I expected him to
talk. He didn't. I did the talking. Is this how you
do from where you come from, huh? I threw into
his face. Is this how you will connive with staff
to jump over the queue when at the Barclays
Bank in London or the Royal Bank in Edinburgh
or Dime Savings Bank of New York? Ha, we don't
do like that here in Nigeria o. We follow due-
process. Mafi bredi komi lomi obe je, ogbeni
oyinbo! L'Eko Ile? Oma to sori queue yen ni se.
He folded his arms and looked on imperiously.
At this point, the bank top officials had gathered
around. There were attempts to 'rescue' the
whiteman to their office upstairs. I halted it. The
moment I noticed, I told them that if they go
attend to the whiteman upstairs, I will tell
everyone on the queue to march upstairs, too.
And then, they resorted to begging. And even the
woman whose fight I had taken ownership of
started to beg me. Otito Baba Oko mi, she
pleaded. No, oyinbo MUST join the queue! Their
pleading fuelled my anger. What is that?
These things that come with neo-imperialism
sha. I've also heard about how whitemen smoke
in places marked No Smoking at the Nigerian
airport, and they go, without being penalised as
would Nigerian offenders.

It doesn't matter whether the OP slapped the oyinbo or not , It is of no point- As long as we remain underdeveloped as a nation and as a society, we will always feel inferior to the white man simply because, by all ramifications- they are way ahead of us. So all the op supporters here can scream from now till eternity about how well the op has done, y'all still go back to your room and feel the same inferiority that you are all claiming is non existent in public. Classic case of self denial guys.

Op, I love what you did and how I wish I was at same bank, I would have also turned the bank upside down.

Same thing I did to an Indian man at the Airport that was insulting maybe his driver and I was coming into the country. When I heard him insulting the guy, I jumped on him held him to the wall and the airport security came up on us as I pinned him to the wall, asking him " who the hell are you to get your fvcking asss to Nigeria to insult a citizen of Nigeria in his own country?" Boy I was mad as I told him that the insult is on Nigerians and not to the guy.

Boy, you did well cus that inferiority complex of a black man is still in us as our people still see them as been superior to we blacks.

What I really found annoying and strange is the lackadaisical and indifferent attitude of the vast majority of Nigerians on the queue.

I'm happy one Nigerian was courageous enough to stop the madness.

The greater blame resides with us. The White guy just did what he thought was the proper thing, since he's done that on so many occasions.

We don't a working system. People are very observant. They simply interprete a system and then act accordingly.
