Facebook opens its first Africa office in Johannesburg, South Africa

Facebook has opened its first headquarters in Africa as it looks to add to its existing 120 million users on the continent.

The new office in Johannesburg will focus on growing markets in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, it says.

About one in five people in Africa have internet access, but almost double that figure are expected to have mobile internet connections by 2020.

About 80% of those who use Facebook in Africa access the site by mobile phone.

"This is one of the places where our next billion users are coming from," Facebook's vice-president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa Nicola Mendelsohn told Bloomberg news.

Facebook says it will also be looking to boost growth in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Mozambique and Ethiopia as part of its increased presence in Africa.

Why not Lagos. I hope foreign investors interest in Nigeria is not also depreciating with the fall in oil price.

does it need to be in nigeria?

its a virtual site, and besides they have enough info already. I just hope some people wont use the office as a base for launching further attacks on nigeria.

this is someone's business heavily invested in.

Expect him to site his company where there will be maximum gain from less cost of production.

South Africa has a more conducive and investor friendly environment than Nigeria. Plus they have a better economy.

I honestly don't understand why Nigerians don't patronize their own technology. Here is facebook now throwing it in Nigeria's face. I'm going to write a piece about this soon. But when a country doesn't communicate a challenge to tech giants like this, Facebook or Google, that country will continue to be taken for granted, ridden all over and kicked while on the ground. Nigeria needs to wake up!
