Boko Haram: Emir of Kano blames North over failure to invest in education by KEVIND: 11:36am On Jul 05, 2015 |
The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Saturday, urged Muslims in the North to adopt new approaches to address the social, economic and political challenges facing them. Sanusi gave the advice in Kaduna at the 10th annual Ramadan Lecture organised by Voice of Nigeria (VON), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), with the theme: ‘The Challenges of Muslim Ummah in the 21st Century.’ He said that the region’s failure to invest in quality education and scholarship was partly responsible for its backwardness and rise of divisive groups like the Boko Haram. The emir observed that due to dwindling socio-economic situation in the region, majority of the people, particularly the youth, have been left without any hope in life and therefore, easy recruits into insurgency. “If there is no future in a society, then Boko Haram ideas will thrive,” he said. The emir advised political and religious leaders in the region to take a cue from other regions in the country and thrive to effect necessary changes. “If Borno and Yobe were a country, they would be poorer than Niger, Chad and Cameroon. No wonder, the Boko Haram crisis started there,” he added. Sanusi stressed the need for Muslims in the North to regulate religious preaching and stop exposing their children to ‘quack Malams.’ He also advised parents to take “very serious interest in the activities of their children”, saying that the new media had radicalised a lot of youths across the world and turned them into extremists. “We need to watch what our children watch. If we do not give them the correct Islamic education, they will get the wrong one from somewhere else.” He also challenged the Muslims to undertake a holistic change in their approach to socio-economic issues. “We must not continue to allow culture to be dorminant in our lives. We need to look at ourselves, reappraise our socio-economic approach to life,” he said. The emir said Muslim clerics must take common stand on contemporary issues such as age of marriage in Islam, women education, rights and forced marriage as well as modernisation and education generally Source:http://nigerianpilot.com/insurgency-emir-of-kano-blames-north-over-failure-to-invest-in-education/

Sanusi - thanks for stating the obvious. But: For how long did the north hold power ? Do you think its right for the rest of Nigeria suffer because of Northerners? Are you not a beneficiary of the Northern agenda to keep their people in ignorance in order to control them? 2 Likes |

Northern elites/politicians should have thought of this decades back but they rather made the almajiris pawns in their eternal quest for power. Ironically the likes of SLS foisted a 'certificate-less' Buhari on nigerians. 1 Like |

I thought it was Jonathan, Ihekeriji, Oritsejafor, CAN and Israel behind Boko Haram? Don't be fooled by Sanusi. Radicalization increases as you climb the social ladder in the north. Individuals like Sanusi are the most radicalized extremist in Nigeria. Or how do we explain the fun fact that Abdul Mutallab his protege was educated in good schools in both Nigeria and England before enrolling himself in Al Qaeda bomb institute of destruction? Mohammed Yususf, the late founder of Boko Haram had influential and educated northern Muslims many with influential links as his inner disciples. The likes of Sanusi formed the Muslim Student Society on campus in ABU, Zaria. Their legacy of protesting violent img for Sharia law to be included in our Constitution in 1979 is well documented. Radicalization occurs more in and around campuses and lecture halls in the north where most lectures are based on the great Zionist plot and the US agenda of destroying Muslims than that which occurs in rusty mosques where the peasants attend. 2 Likes |

Reski:Offer what science subject? Islam is most important to them (muslems) than any other thing. They want people to join their faith. But why using force to go about it. Let them relegate religion to the background for formal education reform. These guys are cheaply convince becos of their intense religion believe rooted well when they were younger and.the need to liberate their minds through education is now to save North part of Nigeria. 1 Like |

A Northerner that is able to admit their mistakes. That is rare but I am happy to see it. The sooner northerners realize their mistakes and understand that most of the blame for Boko Haram's creation belongs to them, the sooner they can take steps to try and correct the flawed practices of their society. The reason that Chad, Niger and Cameroon are not as affected by Boko Haram is not because they're not poor because of they definitely are but because the only people they blame for their poverty is themselves not others from a different region. 1 Like |
