Seeking to fast-track the economic growth of Rivers State, Governor Nyesom Wike has developed a synergy between the Federal Government, the state government and some major investors to repair a portion of the East-West Road linking the Onne Sea Port.
The governor announced this at a meeting he held with the representatives of the participating companies and federal agencies at the Onne Sea Port, on Saturday.
According to a statement issued by a media aide to the governor, Simeon Nwakaudu, the portion for immediate repair would be from Eleme Junction to the Onne Junction on the East-West Road.
The companies that expressed commitment to the reconstruction work included Intels Logistics Services, Indorama Limited, West African Container Terminal and Port Harcourt Refinery Company.
Others were the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Free Trade Zone, while the Federal Government was represented by the Federal Ministry of Niger Delta and the Federal Ministry of Works.
Wike also disclosed that the total repair of the road would be kicked off on Wednesday, while the contractor, RCC, would be paid 50 per cent of the contract sum for the project, expected to be executed in two months.
The governor said, upon the payment of the 50 per cent of the contract sum, the contractor was expected to drive the project to 80 per cent completion before the final payment would be made.
He said the road to the Onne Sea Port was critical to the effective use of the port by investors across the country, hence the need to put it in proper condition.
Governor Wike said due to the importance of the road, it could not be left to the dictates of official bureaucracy, necessitating the initiative to assemble all stakeholders to commit to the reconstruction of the portion that had degraded badly.

Anoda reason to hail Wike. Earlier in d day someone posted about bad portion of this same road around Akpajo axis n same day this road awarded. This is d diff btw Wike n Amaechi. Even though we all know this is a Federal rd n part of d East West rd, Amaechi wud v done something to at least make it better but b/c of his penchant to paint Gej black and to show d FG was not working ignored it n a lot of other important roads for one sinister motive or d other. The way Wike is being positively in d news these days is quite surprising to me. I also complained about Egbelu-Ogbogoro-Ozuoba rd somedays back n just learnt this evening construction will start on d 17th of this mnth. Iwofe rd is already on.
