A major component of Yoruba cultural system is the traditional institution of Obaship, Baale (head of community under Oba). Every Yoruba village, town or community has a Oba (King) or Baale as the case may be, selected from royal lineage or home, when the throne becomes vacant either by death orthrough removal which is seldom. The selection of a new Oba is done by the king makers through the consultation of Ifa. In Oyo, this is done by the Oyomesi, the seven king makers headed by Bashorun. Other Yoruba towns have bodies with different name but the same function. Eg. In Ijebu land and Egba Alake, the selection council is called Osugbo.
In Oyo, Alaafin is the overall head of Oyo town and the Empire. Any siting Alaafin is a descendant ofOranmiyan, the first king of Oyo. There is presence of check and balance in which is done by theOyomesi, whose membership is also hereditary like the Oba...
