New rule demands equal distribution among geo-political zones

THE Senate will distribute its committees equally among the six geo-political zones of the country irrespective of political party affiliations.

Accordingly, each zone is expected to get at least nine committee chairmanship seats out of the total 57 Senate committees.

This new tradition is in compliance with Order 3 (4) of the Senate Standing Orders 2015 as amended.

The new Standing Order states: “The appointment of Senators as chairmen and members of committees shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the six geo-political zones of the country and there shall be no predominance of Senators from a few geo-political zones.”

However, this portion of the Standing Order runs contrary and in conflict with the 2011 version, which favoured the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In fact, it was not contained in the 2011 version of the Senate Rule, which was used by the Senator David Mark-led Seventh Senate.
In the Seventh Senate, the distribution showed a serious discrepancy in favour of PDP. In that arrangement, the South-South got 14 chairmanship seats, followed by the North Central, South East and North West, which got 10 each.

The South West got the least number of chairmanship positions with only five seats while the North East got seven.

The political implication of the equal sharing principle stipulated by the new rule is that the All Progressives Congress (APC), which drew its membership mainly from the North West, North Central and the South West will enjoy no special preference unlike what PDP enjoyed when it was in power.

The 2015 Standing Rule had generated serious crises leading to the intervention of the police. The Unity Forum Senators had petitioned the Police over what they described as forgery of the Senate Rule. This was a reaction to their defeat in the battle for Senate leadership.

Consequently, the Police had summoned leadership of the Seventh Senate including Senators David Mark, Ike Ekweremadu as well as Victor Ndoma-Egba. Also invited for questioning was the President of the Eighth Senate, Bukola Saraki.

The "Cursed"child is back again with his anti-party and rubbishing the Party, hoping and praying with all the sabotage and back stabbing that come 2019 he will be seen for all irrespective of party affiliation, this kind of game has never happen anyway around the world, what he fail to understand is; he is simply playing with fire that will surely consume him on the long run, it's obvious now why Jagaban doesn't want this clown to head the senate, "over ambitious" and self centred is the only words that can describe Saraki, I don't know whether PDP will ever trust a decampee after watching what Saraki is doing to his new party and APC will never forgive this man so tell him how can he win 2019 or 2050 election? As it is now, No Northerner will vote for him same goes for SW, he is now left with SS and SE and Kwara state, going by the happenings in the country, SE will not go for a perceived Northerner and the SS people will not forgive the "brat" for the part he played in rubbishing their own Son, so the only zone left for him is Kwara state, with the help of lai Muhammed he will not get a pass mark from their cuz I trust Jagaban will deplore all his political arsenal just to finished off the "brat". Those powerful people that are pushing Saraki are the same sort of people that push GEJ to go for second term; are you thinking of what am thinking? Who knows may be one day Saraki may also be spotted at "generale Société bank" for BVN Reg just like GEJ in first Bank?

this is what we want, is going to bring competition between the parties and make them try to impress the mass by their performance because of election coming ahead , now nigerians have wise up. Secondly, is going to promote tolerance between the two major parties in nigeria and promote the level of maturity between them.

Nonsense. This is APC's government for crying crying out loud, why is Saraki hell-bent on giving relevance to the disgraced and defeated PDP? APC better find a way to impeach the senate president if they want a national assembly that will work with the president to implement the party's programmes. Saraki is only interested in furthering his selfish personal interest and he's ready to compromise the overall party interest to achieve this.

and the drama in the zoo continues.......they will either let us go or the zoo continues to boil.....what people dont get is....APC is not a national party but a merger of two regional parties making it a mega regional party....if APC had won across board they wont be where they are today....so they are trying hard to play soft and include the other zones that rejected them so they can feel a oneness as the way things are they are at their wits end on how to handle this mega regional party that couldnt evolve to be a national party since they didnt win across board...

saraki is playing a script ....he is not doing this as a nationalist but trying hard to help the baby factory of a party to feel like a national party...the SW dont care and some northerners dont care but only a few who are real politicians and have blue blood like saraki know they have to do this if this party has to stand... wink wink wink wink wink
