Ex-niger Delta Minister Orubebe Faces N.6B Corruption Charges…grilled By ICPC by dayo23(f): 7:54am On Jul 15, 2015
A former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s godson, Godsday Orubebe is to face trial over N605 million he used five officials of the Ministry to withdraw. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission(ICPC) which is investigating the fraud, has already interrogated Orubebe on Monday with a view to begin his prosecution along with his accomplices in September.

It was gathered that the huge fund was withdrawn from the Constituency Project account of the ministry by the ex-minister’s five staff without authorization while Orubebe was in charge as Minister.
The ICPC had filed charges against the five staff including Yusuf Agabi (Director of Finance and Account), Abibu Ayinla (Director of Finance), Akpore Okeroghene (Deputy Director of Finance), Idowu Adewale (Deputy Director, Accounts) and Ngozi James (Deputy Director, Accounts).

According to a document obtained from ICPC, the suspects “fraudulently withdrew N605m from the Constituency Project account of the ministry without authorization between July 2013 and October  2014.” They allegedly procured fictitious payment vouchers to cover up the fraud. With President Jonathan out of office, the ICPC summoned the courage to quiz Orubebe for about three hours on Monday.

It was however learnt that already there are immense pressures on the ICPC Chairman, Mr Nta to use Orubebe as a prosecution witness in the case instead of prosecuting him as the principal culprit. Jonathan appointed Nta into office, while Orubebe, the ex-president and Nta are all from the South South region of the country, a sentiment being explored to bury the case at the moment. Meanwhile Justice Husseini Baba of the FCT High Court, Abuja has already  fixed September 16 for the arraignment of the suspects.
