In a move that has shocked all and sundry, 10 South Africans from a charitable organization have been arrested in China.

“The South African government was notified on Sunday about the arrest and the embassy in Beijing thereafter,”
“The arrest was confirmed and the embassy is in contact with the Chinese authorities.”

This was the response of the department of international relations and cooperation’s spokesperson Nelson Kgwete to the FCTPost.

The South African disaster relief organization, Gift of the Givers (GOTG) had on Tuesday come out and announced the arrest of the 10 South Africans who were detained along with 9 Britons and 1 Indian.

The founder of the Gift of the Givers, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, had this to say about the incident: “Family members [until] now, four days later, have had no communication with those detained,”

“The Chinese, now trying to find reasons for the detention suggested that some members were linked to a terror group, to a banned organization, [and] to watching propaganda videos in their hotel room,”

The Chinese has agreed to release 11 out of 20 of the detainees who had been accused of watching propaganda videos. The other 9 detainees were being held without being charged as the same accusation had been brought against them.

One of the families that were affected by the arrests was that of Vodacom Group CEO, Shameel Joosub whose brother; aunt and uncle were also detained.

Joosub expressed his concerns in this manner: “My family and I are deeply concerned for the safety and well being of my brother, aunt and uncle. Along with 17 other South African, British and Indian citizens, they were detained on July 10 by the Chinese authorities at the airport in Erdos, Inner Mongolia, and held without charge.” He said.

“We are in close contact with the South African authorities that are working to secure their release,” He added.
