Separation/break =singlehood? by MrsChima(f): 11:35pm On Jul 17, 2015
I was at a function where some people were having a heated discussion about separation and/or break from your spouse or mate. Some of the people were saying that once you separates from your spouse you are single.

Some people were saying how can you be married and single? It makes no sense. If a person isn't legally divorced from their spouse then they are still married hence not single.

I interjected saying that unmarried people are single regardless if they are dating or not. Married people who are no longer together without legal divorce are still married/unavailable.

What is your view on this matter?

If a couple were joined together as husband and wife under a judicial system, then they must sign a divorce statement that serves as proof that they are no longer united under the body of marriage.

If this hasn't been done by a couple, regardless of whether they decide not to be together anymore, they are still married.

The word is "enstranged" and not "single". The woman continues to bear the "Mrs" title until she's LEGALLY seperated (divorced).♦

Do you think estranged couples should be dating other people?

Married people even date other people but in both cases they cannot legalize their relationships with their new partners via marriage until divorce is finalized.♦

You can be married but separated. Usually the step before reconciliation or divorce.
