Conflict in the Niger Delta arose in the early 1990s over tensions between foreign oil corporations and a number of the Niger Delta's minority ethnic groups who feel they are being exploited, particularly the Ogoni and the Ijaw.
Prior to 2003, the epicenter of regional violence was Warri. However, after the violent convergence of the largest military groups in the region, the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force (NDPVF) led by Mujahid Dokubo-Asari and the Niger Delta Vigilante (NDV) led by Ateke Tom (both of which are primarily made up of Ijaws), conflict became focused on Port Harcourt and outlying towns. The two groups dwarf a plethora of smaller militias supposedly numbering more than one hundred.

Here are pictorial story of the events that occur during this period...

THE MILITANTS FELT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WASN'T GIVING THEM THE REQUIRED ATTENTION SO THEY STEPPED UP BY KIDNAPPING FOREIGN WORKERS WHO ARE WORKING FOR THE OIL COMPANIES OR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

THE CONFLICT WAS INEVITABLE AND THE NIGERIAN MILITARY WAS SUMMONED IN ALL REGIONS WHERE MILITANTS WERE PRESENT. THIS CAUSED HUGE CASUALTIES AND LOST OF PRIVATE AND GOVERNMENT PROPERTIES

THE GOVERNMENT OF PRESIDENT UMARU MUSA YARADUA ALSO SIGNED AMNESTY DEAL FOR ALL FIGHTERS AND MILITANTS DETAINED WERE RELEASED

Its a shame that Nigerians dont take care of their own. Even the so called Niger Delta fighters are more greedy and selfish than those they are fighting against now.

The Niger Delta Development Commission was established by Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo in the year 2000 with the sole mandate of developing the oil-rich Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria. In September 2008, President Umaru Yar'Adua announced the formation of a Niger Delta Ministry, with the Niger Delta Development Commission to become a parastatal under the ministry. Though it is said that both initiative has failed in it's goal and corruption and embezzlement seems to be the order regulating it. BELOW ARE SOME CHANGES THE CREEKS ARE WITNESSING DUE TO THEIR HARD FIGHT AND BRAVERY

GOD BLESS NIGERIA

Now, this is a photostory I enjoyed. Brings back the memories of those days when Freemanan and I transversed the river Ethiope in Abraka down from Umuebu to Sapele looking for pipelines to blow up and white men to kidnap but all to no avail. We ended up snapping pictures though. But my camera was stolen by one rugged swimmer in McCarthy beach area. He wasn't even afraid of our costumes and powdered bodies. Anyway, when amnesty started, we wanted to partake being that we were part of the struggle but we didn't have any weapon to drop apart from a dusty walking stick belonging to Freeman's ancestors that looked like a gun. We were also afraid the amnesty was a big setup. We didn't trust the government. So at last, we decided to just lay low and finish our degree programmes. If we had done the amnesty, by now Freemanan would have bought a large Peninsula in Lekki for only his dogs to stay. sad
.
Oh the good old days!
