NIMASA is known as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, and is also of the few most powerful agencies in Nigeria. Along with the Nigerian Ports Authority(NPA) and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, it racks in billions of naira as revenue to the federal government. It is responsible for Nigerian shipping regulations, maritime labour, coastal waters and rescue services.

The agency has being painted in bad light since the appointment of Mr Pattick Akpobolokemi on December 22, 2010 as the Director General of NIMASA by then President Goodluck Jonathan, from the Niger Delta University in Bayelsa State. It was a joyous and memorable day to certain staff of the agency after the announcement of the sack of Mr Akpobolokemi last week. There are so many controversies trailing the ex NIMASA boss.

One of such is the January 5, 2012, $103.4 million concession contract awarded to Messrs Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited, GWVSL which Is owned by ex militant Government Ekpumopolo a.k.a Tompolo by Mr Akpobolokemi and the Federal Executive Council of President Goodluck Jonathan. This was a 10 year contract to effectively police Nigeria maritime domain and ensure compliance with international maritime conventions on vessels and ships, voyaging the country's waters and which the outcome after contract resulted in a record high oil theft of more than $20 billion annual loss to the economy (32,000) barrels daily. One wonders why such a contract will be awarded to a private company with no known experience in maritime services and why the primary assignment of the Nigerian Navy was handed out to an ex militant.

The tussle for the contract and also #250 million monthly pay to the same firm for hiring of vessel led to the transfer of then Minister of Transport Mr Yessuf Sulaiman to the Ministry of Sports.

Also in April 2015, certain staff of the agency petitioned the President, Inspector General of Police and Minister of Transport (Senator Idris Umar) on how Mr Akpobolokemi had favoured people from a certain part of The country in recruitment and promotion, through the newly recruited private firm, which turned human resource management of the Nigerian Public Service upside down.

Till date Mr Akpolobokemi maintains his innocence in all these controversies before his sack but it was only fair, that he was relieved of his duty to prove and clear his name, while allowing another technocrat move the agency forward. One only hopes that the next Director General will lead NIMASA out of this wilderness.

Another 4 years of Gej would have ruined Nigeria...fact

Nobody should complain of favouritism cause Gej filled the sweet spots with his own people. Wrong I know unfortunately that is our Nigeria works
