Nasarawa State University, Keffi, was established under the
Nasarawa State Law No. 2 of 2001 as passed by the State
House of Assembly. It officially took off for effective activities in March 2002 following the appiontment of the pioneer Vice Chancellor, Professor Adamu Baikie. On October 2005 the Department of Mass Communication was established to train young men and women to make important contributions to the practice of journalism and Mass communication. With the ever increasing number of
broadcasting stations, newspapers, magazines, advertising
and public relations firm in the country, it is clear that the
Department is helpful in producing personnel to fill the
urgent need for increased manpower in Mass Communication industries.

In the Department, a high level is placed on contributions
from many philosophical and disciplinary perspectives.
Been a social science course it is multi-dimensional. The
programme prepares students by exposing them
relentlessly to the real world of broadcasting stations and newspaper/magazine publishing houses, and by placing
them in situations so difficult that the only way out is to
THINK. Aside from working for the media as print and
broadcast journalists, programme producers, editors, media managers, public relation officers and advertising
executives, they could choose to pursue careers in college
and university teaching and in conducting research and
contributing to policy in government and private
organisations.

To enhance the acqusition of reportorial and wrting skills,
the Department published a training newspaper, CAMPUS
WATCH and magazine, CAMPUS ICON. Similarily, it is well
equipped with broadcasting studio to foster professionalism
in radio (NSUK 101.1 FM) and television programming and
production.
