BlackMagic[\b] Blackmagic’s blend of afrobeat and classic hiphop in his first single titled “Tomorrow” which was released in 2010 did capture our attention and held on. His sound is different, its modern and eclectic yet classic – Blackmagic is one of the new-age African artists that everyone young and old can relate to. The Blackmagic movement: Africa ft. Vector, Phyno & Reminisce, Level, Golden Girl, Brand New, Pass You ft. Oritsefemi ; has steadily been gathering strength underground…we are keeping our finger’s crossed and hope it doesn’t lose momentum. [b]Praiz Nigeria's "John Legend",Praiz Ugbede Adejo, better known as Praiz is a singer, songwriter and music producer who has carved a niche for himself in his almost one decade in the Nigerian music scene. The singer has remained consistent since he came into limelight in 2008 when he emerged second runner-up in the popular music reality TV show, MTN Project Fame. With songs like – ‘Rich and Famous’, ‘Mercy’ and ‘Oshey’ featuring Congolese musician, Awilo Longomba and a rendition of Rihanna’s mind-blowing single, ‘Stay’ to his name, the soul/R&B singer has worked with notable artistes like M.I, Sound Sultan, Wizkid, Bez, Sheyi Shay, Iyanya, Chidinma, Kcee, Waje, Cobhams Asuquo, Patoranking and Skales. After nearly a decade in the industry, on December 14, 2014, the singer who is currently signed to X3M Music, dropped his debut double album, Rich and Famous, with a UK promo tour scheduled for this year. In 2012, his track – ‘I love you’ was nominated for The Headies Recording of The Year/Best Vocal Performance and the Next Act by NEA. He was also nominated for NEA Best Pop/R&B Artist of the Year Awards in 2014. Music fans who wonder what has become of Nigerian R&B acts should keep in touch with this artiste as he possesses what a Banky W, Timi Dakolo or Bez would offer. Niyola Soul singer, Niyola deserves better recognition even if there has not been any new release from her this year. Her previous songs are exciting and rich in melody. Niyola got into the music mix in 2000 when she emerged runner up at the Amen Starlet Competition but began her professional music career in 2005 when she became associated with Trybe Records owned by Eldee. She recorded 3 singles before getting signed to EME ,working along with Banky W and Shaydee and spent some time with Wizkid and Skales who were with the label then. In 2013, she dropped 2 hit singles – ‘Toh Bad’ and ‘Crazy’ laced with her warm and refreshing voice. Since then, she has gone on to work with the likes of Sound Sultan on ‘Belle No Be Showglass’, Banky W’s track – ‘Be My Lover’ and Lynxxx’s ‘No Comment’. Niyola, won the ‘Female Artist of the Year’ gong at NEA Awards last year, is yet to release a debut album but her recent track – ‘Love To Love You’ featuring Banky W is also a song one can mark as a favorite while we continue to expect more. For many of us who love cool music, Niyola is surely one of our favorite artists. Timi Dakolo Timi Dakolo is one very talented artiste. He’s not just a badass singer with incredible vocal dexterity, he’s a terrific lyricist with a penchant for juxtaposing actual words into melodious symphonies. In fact, his general musical appreciation far supercedes what our industry defines to be music – in their limits. He had one of the best songs of 2014 – IYAWO MI. But isn’t it funny that one of the best and savvy musicians of our era is considered to be underrated? Well, we think so. Brymo Having dropped a debut album in 2007, his career started out well with his first single being ‘Ara.’ After the classic single and featuring on Ice Prince‘s monster hit, ‘Oleku’, Olawale Ashimi, popularly known as Brymo should be among the biggest stars on the Nigerian music scene by now. But that is not really the case with the singer, composer, songwriter and recording artist with over 10 years in the industry and 4 albums to his profile. Starting with his first official single, ‘Ara’ released in 2011, Brymo followed up with ‘Good Morning’ and released his 2nd album with Chocolate City in 2012 titled The Son Of a Kapenta before leaving the label in 2013. He has since dropped 2 independent albums. First is Merchants, Dealers & Slaves in 2013, an album which he said was recorded at a time his aspirations were at crossroads in a battle against societal limitations and prejudice (a journey into self- realization) and in October 2014, he dropped his most recent studio album, Tabula Rasa (Te Gift), which is his fourth. With several nominations from awards organisers like NEA, The Headies, Channel O Music Video Awards, Hip Hop World Awards and others, the R&B singer has only won 3 official awards, namely Hip Hop World Awards for Recording of the Year in 2012, Channel O Music Video Awards Most Gifted Afro Pop Video of the Year for ‘Ara’ in 2012 and the 2013/2014 All Africa Music Awards Songwriter of The Year for ‘Down’ Mo’Cheddah Mo’Cheddah got in into the industry in 2009 as a 19- year old rapper and singer who delivered an exceptional performance on the song and video of Knighthouse featured track, ‘Won beri’ alongside Sauce Kid and Teeto. Her unique style of freestyling has grown over the years as she’s not ready to drop out yet even with so many young acts in the industry today. The pop artiste totally won our hearts when she dropped her hit single – ‘Ko ma roll’ off her debut album, Franchise Celebrity released in 2010. She has since remained relevant and has worked with notable artistes like M.I, Phyno, Eldee, T.R, Sasha, Mode 9, Cobhams, Ice Prince and Skuki on ‘Stamina’. She won MTV Africa Music Awards Best New Artiste award in 2010 alongside the Channel O Music Video Awards for ‘If You Want Me’ that same year. She left the scene for a while to focus on a few other things, among which is her education, she made a comeback, teaming up with Phyno and Cobhams Asuquo on her 2014 debut single, ‘Destinambari’. Elated with the recording then, she retorted: ‘The making of the song was an amazing experience; working with Cobhams and Phyno on this track is a match made in heaven! I am so excited and can’t wait to share it with the world.’ She has followed up with ‘My Time’ and ‘Tori Olorun’. Just like the highly rated Wizkid, Davido and Tiwa Savage and co, Mo’Chedda is also a superstar from the female side. Why not pay more attention to her and see what you are missing? Eva Alordiah Every country needs their first lady of rap and although the way has been paved by many female rappers, we have to say I think Eva is heading straight to the top. Her unique style is not only in her music but her fashion as she showcases in the follow music video, High. We expect much more… Nneka Since dropping her debut EP The Uncomfortable Truth in 2005, this singer has had an outstanding music career with 2 EPs and 5 albums. She gained worldwide appraisal from the media when she dropped her first studio album – Victim of Truth, which was released in Germany, England, France, Netherlands, Nigeria and Japan. Having toured Africa and several countries in Europe and highly rated in Germany where she is based, the singer is not getting enough buzz in Nigeria whereas she should be reckoned with as an equal to Asa but we seem not to give her the desired attention. Nneka has won MOBO Awards, Channel O Music Video Awards, Museke Online Africa Music Award and NEA Awards and recorded a song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa titled: ‘Viva Africa'. BEZ Emmanuel Bezhiwa Idakula also known as Bez is an alternative soul artiste who adds a bit of jazz, RnB and soul to his music. Born Nov 11,1983, gifted with two musical skills, his magical fingers and an awesome voice, both of which have been able to make a name for him in the industry. He was the 2nd runner up at the 2009 Hennessy artistry competition Nigeria, his debut album titled ” Super Sun” was launched July 2011, it included fans favorites tracks such as Super Sun, Zuciya Daya, More You and That Stupid Song to mention a few. Asides his talent, hard work and creativity, Bez gives a fantastic account of himself through his imaginative lyrics. His latest material ‘There’s a fire’, released in January, is still so hot out there. But irrespective of these abilities and sincerity to his art and obvious talent, he isn’t as patronized as he should be. As time goes by perhaps… ILL-BLISS The ‘Oga Boss’ of Nigerian rap – ‘Ibo Boy’ Ill Bliss is quite like the great white shark – keeps a low profile, not seen often but when he does come out of ‘hiding’ boy does he make an impact! Although he has been quite busy working on his protégés like Chidinma, Mz Kiss, Fefe, the release of ‘Oga Boss’ shows that he is still very much in the game. Ill Bliss effortlessly spits some superb lyrics throughout ‘Anam Achi Kwanu’, and is the definition of laidback-cool (the best way to describe him). He just released his 3rd Studio album: POWERFUL last month. Show Dem Camp Ghost and Tec, stepped into the music scene in 2009, and dropped their first project The Clone Wars mix- tape in 2010 which got them a lot of respect. Their debut album ‘The Dreamer Project’ released in September 2011, featured collabos with M.I, 2Face and MayD, and got props from the official ‘rap- heads’ in Nigeria. This duo’s lyrical prowess is top notch, and the fact that they make African rap sound soo good should put them amongst the top 5 hip-hop acts in Africa, but unfortunately they aren’t as widely known as they should be. Waje She is no-doubt one of the best female vocalists in the country with a vocal range that is out of this world. Ever since she came onto the scene when she featured on P-Square’s ‘Do Me’ track, she has managed to prove that her voice is no hoax. She is recognized locally and internationally with a couple of awards to show for it and her album titled ” Words Aren’t Just Enough” (WAJE) is definitely one to anticipate this year. Hopefully, people will understand and recognize the vocal powerhouse that is Waje. Phenom Topa Onimowo, popularly known as Phenom; the Knight House General, is said to be the only rapper, as far as history in the Nigerian music industry goes, to sign the dotted lines of a record deal without having released a record. His recent single ‘Shukubambam’ is still a record that’s heavy on playlists across the country. Phenom has being rated as one of the personalities that will represent Nigerian rap in the future, so keep your shades on Phenom cos your future is looking extremely bright indeed. Ikechukwu Ikechukwu started with Storm, then went on to be part of the now defunct Mohits Records label and now he’s doing his own thing with the World Famous Akademy. Though controversy has closely (and rather unfortunately) followed Ikechukwu, the fact that he is very talented is something that cannot be disputed. He is a demon of a rapper and he can sing – no not the auto-tune singing, he can really really sing. Hopefully the controversy can be a thing of the past and the focus will be back on his awesome talent. Vector Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, better known by his stage name Vector tha Viper, is a Nigerian Hip hop artist. Vector has released two studio albums, his debut album "State of Surprise (SOS)" and a follow-up. He is the voice behind the Sprite commercial that has aired on most radio stations across Nigeria since 2009. In anticipation of his second studio album, he released a mix tape titled "Bar Racks". He released his second studio album titled "The Second Coming" on 12 December 2012. To me and the "afro" rap fans, he is arguably the best in hardcore rapping in Africa but it is so sad he hasn't gotten the desired recognition. Vector’s style of rap runs through the fast and equally slow tempo. His style of rap has been compared to that of rapper Jay-Z. Notable mentions: Cobhams Asuquo,Jeremiah Gyang,Yungsix,Adol,Simi,BOJ... Free free to add yours... |

Shortyy:You know, this is Nigeria where the lyrics doesn't matter as long as you have a fast tempo beat...If the likes of Praiz,Timi,Cobhams,Mi,Jeremiah were Americans ir British, they would surely surpass the love we are given them here in Nigeria...Nigerians don't really care about good lyrics as long as you've gat the swags and beat, you would surely make it in the music mainstream regardless of the kind of (wack) lyrics you spits... |
