USA Refuses To Sell Weapons To Nigeria, Against BH After Buhari Anti-gay Stance by Treash(m): 9:00am On Jul 23, 2015 |
After a four-day official visit in the
United States of America, President
Muhammadu Buhari will be returning
to Nigeria today with no pledge of
concrete military assistance against
Boko Haram terrorists from his hosts.
The US government told the Nigerian
leader that its arms are tied by an
American law, the Leahy Act, which
prevents it from selling arms to
countries with human rights abuse
records.
President Buhari, who is returning
home displeased, told the US
government that the refusal by
America to arm Nigerian troops
because of “so-called human rights
violations” and “unproven
allegations,” would only help Boko
Haram.
A global human rights watch group,
Amnesty International, had recently
accused the Nigerian military under
former President Goodluck Jonathan
of gross human rights abuses in the
prosecution of the war on terrorists.
The Nigerian military forces had
denied the allegation which President
Buhari pledged to investigate.
Buhari “departs with little practical
military assistance in his battle against
the Islamist militants who have turned
the northeast of his country into a
bloody war zone,” the Associated
Press (AP) reported on Wednesday.
The US government has vowed to
help Nigeria defeat the insurgency but
it is prohibited under law from
sending weapons to countries that fail
to tackle human rights abuses.
“Regretably, the blanket application of
the Leahy Law by the United States on
the grounds of unproven allegations
of human rights violations levelled
against our forces has denied us
access to appropriate strategic
weapons to prosecute the war,”
Buhari said.
Addressing an audience of policy-
makers, activists and academics in
Washington, Buhari complained that
Nigerian forces had been left “largely
impotent” in the face of Boko Haram’s
campaign of kidnapping and
bombings.
“They do not possess the appropriate
weapons and technology which we
could have had if the so-called human
rights violations had not been an
obstacle,” he said.
“Unwittingly, and I dare say
unintentionally, the application of the
Leahy Law Amendment by the United
States government has aided and
abetted the Boko Haram terrorists.”
He appealed to both the White House
and the US Congress to find a way
around the law — introduced by
Senator Patrick Leahy in 1997 — and
to supply Nigerian troops with high-
tech weapons under a deal “with
minimal strings.”
Since 2009, Boko Haram has been
trying to establish an Islamist
breakaway state in a conflict that has
seen 15,000 people killed and 1.5
million displaced.
The group’s brutality and in particular
the mass kidnapping and
enslavement of schoolgirls has
shocked world opinion.
In June, rights watchdog Amnesty
International said there was sufficient
evidence to launch an investigation
into senior Nigerian officers for war
crimes.
In a 133-page report, the group
blamed the army for the extrajudicial
execution of 1,200 people and the
torture or arbitrary detention of
thousands more.
Buhari insists that the charges are not
proven, but he has replaced his
senior military commanders and has
promised to investigate the
allegations. .com/talk/topic,270158.0.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

What is even wrong with our leaders? How do you expect the chief of terror to help you with weapons to suppress terrorism? In as much as i support the Buhari's administration, i can not but say it is folly on its part to go seek for military assisstance from a Nation whose conduct so far, has only increased the belief by many that it is it that is behind Nigeria's current terror predicament! And come to think of it, are there no other nations in the world that are selling weapons? What happened to Russia, China, etc, etc? Or is there a curse that our leaders must always go back to what the Truckpusher called "their slave masters?" Na wow o! 2 Likes |

Appleyard:It is a shame that in this 21st century African leaders are still running to the same people that bastardized their continent for ages to seek for help in their own internal problems. Which race did the white man run to become who they are? Can't we embark on capacity building given the rising number of population and available resources ? Why is it difficult for us to look inwardly and make something out of ourselves instead of turning ourselves into a race of beggars? Why has the Nigerian leadership not been able to harness our natural resources, human resources and the teeming population to build whatever we want and strengthen to maintain while pushing boundaries ? We have all it takes to become great without begging any nation for any kind of help. 1 Like |

Truckpusher: Of course! That is the multi million dollar question i keep asking my self. The black man continue to make himself so inferior before the white man in so much that at times makes me wonder if it wasn't the same intelligence of the Creator that is behind both creativity? I am so disappointed that Nigeria that is suppose to lead the way out of such self-impose enslavement that the black race finds itself, is the one diving head-on into the same captivity over and over again, boasting of the most clueless, dull and myopic daff-gang of leaders. Very pathetic! |

Appleyard:What do you expect from some bunch of corrupt elites that steals from their own people to invest the same money in the land of the same people that seems to hold all the aces ? Until we as a people especially people in leadership positions shun materialism and build a country that our own people can be proud of, we will continuously remain at the mercy of these imperialists. The hypocrisy of the West should be a made a compulsory course of study in schools for all kids at the age of two. We will liberate the black race one day with our blood , sweat and intellectual capacity even as we've been surrounded with too many people that bears the same color yet running with that ancient disease called mental slavery. But this generation must stop it at all cost. 1 Like |

I think Buhari is idiotic along with his cabinet Why don't they get the police, and armed forces to stop brutalizing Nigerians, collecting bribes and generally treating us with lack of respect and dignity? There should be body cams and other methods of surveiling the police But APC are too stoopid to know what to do |
