Pan Yoruba Groups Blame Oba Akinruntan For Crisis In Ilaje, Ondo State by IROHINOodua: 12:48pm On Jul 23, 2015
A league of sixteen Pan Yoruba groups have descended heavily on the traditional ruler of Ugbo, His Royal Majesty Oba Fredrick Akinruntan accusing him of being the man behind a strong of sea piracy and bunkering in the oil producing Ilaje communities.
In a joint statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday, the Pan-Yoruba groups accuse Oba Akinruntan of masterminding violence and mayhem in the region in order to sustain his brutal stronghold in the region.
The statement signed by the Alliance of Pan Yoruba Groups, (APAYOG) described the Oba as the main source of conflict and unrest in the Ilaje area. The statement was signed by Chief Ojekunle Adeojo and Princes Oyinade Adeyemi on behalf of the groups. They want Oba Akinruntan to emulate ‘decent and polished traditional rulers like the Alaafin of Oyo and the Alake of Egbaland in dealing with their subjects.’
The group stated “We call on traditional rulers across Yorubaland. We call on President Mohammed Buhari. We call on men and women of goodwill to put an end to the gross impunity of the Oba of Ugbo, His Royal Majesty, Oba Akinruntan.” The groups said they would launch local and international campaign against the Oba’s reign of terror.

The group said that violence, kidnapping, brigandage and the proliferation of illegal weapons will not end in Yorubaland unless powerful individuals are made to account for their misdeeds in the face of the law of the country.
“Ilaje has been a theater of the absurd since Oba Akinruntan emerged as the traditional ruler of Ugbo. Backed by the ousted people in Aso Rock, Oba Akinruntan let loose armed gangs, scoundrels and vagabonds who steal the nation’s oil resources through piracy and also engage in killings of dissenting voices. In the past five months, not less than six innocent young people have been massacred. The victory of President Buhari is a great feat that should be able to put an end to the Oba’s impunity” The group said that Oba Akinruntan did everything possible to stop the victory of Buhari in Ondo State but that the people rose to put him into shame.
The group said it would embark on international campaigns to ensure that the Oba accounts for his crime against humanity.
“It is important to let the world know what is going on in our indigenous community. The Oba, resting on his vast ill-gotten resources has turned Ilaje communities into a theatre of violence and bloodletting in the quest for cheap money. We call on the leaders in Yorubaland to stop the Oba’s impunity and ensure that he does not continue to desecrate the sacred norms associated with the agelong traditional stool.
