THE House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora has condemned the latest killing of another Nigerian woman, Mrs Evelyn Uche Amarin in Belgium by her Belgian husband. The Reps in a statement in Abuja through the chairman of the Committee, Rep Abike Dabiri-Erewa described the latest killing of Evelyn as “most inhuman, callous and brutish?

Evelyn Uche Amarin, a native of Anioma local government in Delta State and mother of two was on Monday, March 2, 2009 strangled to death by her Belgian husband, Mr. Wim Vanacker in their Berendene home, Belgium with his bare  hands, in a most inhuman, callous and brutish manner. “While grieving for the untimely death of this mother of two, the Committee condemns in unequivocal terms the killing of this woman, and several acts of  indignity against Nigerians by some foreigners in their host countries? she said.
Dabiri-Erewa  (AC-Lagos) noted with dismay the prevalence of domestic violence against women by men. She called on well meaning citizens of the world to rise up in one voice against the rampant abuse of human rights, especially the rights of women by their male counterparts as a demonstration of solidarity and in compliance with all known laws against human and women rights across the globe.

While calling on all Nigerians to be responsible wherever they may reside, the committee implored the Nigerian Foreign Missions, International Community and law enforcement Agencies to wage war against all forms of human right abuse irrespective of colour, creed or race. Dabiri-Erewa also called on the relevant authorities especially the Belgium Police to ensure prompt investigation of the mater in order to bring the culprit to justice.

“We are also calling on the well meaning citizens of world to wake up to the challenges of ensuring that the two little children aged 1 and 4, left by Evelyn do not suffer the misery of death of their mother? Dabiri-Erewa, who extended the condolences of the Committee to the people and Government of Delta state, commended the Nigeria Ambassador in Belgium, Mr Usman Barara for his prompt action.

While lamenting that the deaths and killings of Nigerians in diaspora was too many, she urged the Ambassador to Belgium and EU to ensure that the matter was followed to a logical conclusion especially with the arrest of the husband. The newly created Committee has treated three cases of Nigerians killed In China, Ukraine and Spain in 2009 alone and had influenced the passage of House resolutions to that effect.
