Ekiti: PDP, AC trade words over Oye killing
Dapo Falade, Ado-Ekiti - 15.03.2009

THE last is yet to be heard of the violence that erupted in Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State last Monday in which one person, Ahmed Sadeeq, was killed and one elderly woman was injured.

The state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has claimed that the Action Congress (AC) in the state, was playing politics with the memory of the dead.

The AC, in a counter-claim, insisted that the PDP was only playing true to type as it averred that there was nothing wrong in mourning the dead who was killed “in the struggle to liberate the people from a cabal who had hijacked the state for its own selfish interest.”

It will be recalled that the deceased was shot dead by some people in the crisis that followed the clash of supporters of both the PDP and the AC in Oye-Ekiti, the headquarters of Oye Local Government Area where the AC governorship candidate in the state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was billed to conduct a free medical programme in order to help the people of the community.

The AC subsequently placed adverts in some national newspapers mourning the dead, which the party ascribed to the handiwork of some people it suspected to be thugs hired by the PDP to disrupt its programme on that fateful day.

However, the PDP, in a statement by its Director of Communications and Strategy, Mr. Jackson Adebayo, said; “we deny with disdain the orchestrated attempt by the AC to continue to misinform, misdirect, disorientate and deceive the people of Ekiti State and the whole world on the killing of Ahmed Sadeeq perpetrated by its supporters in Oye Ekiti.

It is also very unfortunate that the AC prides itself in celebrating the misfortune of others when we, in the PDP, are seriously worried about the dastardly act of this our devilish opposition in the way they unleash terror on the people of the state in the name of politics to set an agenda for a more terrible war against the state, sponsored by a former governor of one of the South West states who does not care for the survival of the state but the money he had invested in the struggle for the soul of the state through the AC governorship candidate, Kayode Fayemi.
“In its desperate attempt to jump justice, the AC continued to place advert in the newspapers on the obituary of the person killed by its supporters and thugs mobilised from different states to cover up their foolishness and wickedness. But Ekiti State will never allow this as the killer of Sadeeq must be brought to book.
“It will be recalled that the deceased was on his way home when he was shot to death by the AC supporters and thugs on the day the party of destruction laid siege on the people of Oye Ekiti on March 9, 2009 in the name of a medical programme that has claimed the lives of another two persons who died as a result of the injection taken at the programme the AC claimed would help the people of Oye Ekiti.

“In order to concoct a make-believe positive story in their favour, the AC went to a woman in Ayegbaju Ekiti who was very close to the deceased to procure his photograph to place advert of deception in newspapers by them. The AC supporters did not stop at that to cover up their killing of Sadeeq as they went to his brother at Oye Ekiti to offer him substantial sum of money to keep silent on the matter as they continue to do their abracadabra in the media, both print and electronic.

“Not only that, leaders of the AC also went to the leaders of the Ebira Community in Oye Ekiti to offer them several thousands of naira just to cover up this one act of devil they have done in killing Ahmed Sadeeq in Oye Ekiti during their rally on 9th March, 2009.”

Debunking the allegation, however, the AC spokesman in Ekiti State, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu, said issues raised by the PDP were laughable, adding that; “the AC, going by its antecedents, is not a party that is prone to violence, unlike the PDP, which is generally known as a nest of killers.”

“We were in Oye-Ekiti that fateful day for a programme that would be of mutual benefit to the people of the state, as well as aid the efforts of the state government, irrespective of who was in power, to support the well-being of the people. But the PDP, in its usual characteristics, turned the event into a violent one, resulting in the killing of an innocent soul and leaving several others injured.

What does the Ac and the PDP stand to gain in reducing the number of the people? On our own part, we have been saying it, times without number, that we are not ready to rule over the dead, unlike the PDP which, out of desperation, can even preside over governmental affairs, even from the graveyard.”
