I took my time to read your post, if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't come back to Nigeria! I wouldn't even consider that mediocre job (based on your qualifications though). Wait and finish your programme, also get your residency pls, you'll still get better opportunities. 1 Like 1 Share |

The decision is very simple to make. If you desire to relocate or settling in Nigeria someday; the right time is now since you've gotten a platform to do that. I'll advice not to bother yourself with the current economic situation (no economy is stable). On the otherhand, if you don't desire settling in Nigeria then forget about the 250k offer (you'll get something worthwhile in the US after ur programme). Don't take decision base on any economy situation anywhere. Some persons with less of your exposure & educational qualification are living like kings & queens in Nig while some persons with more of your exposure & educational qualifications are living like slaves in the US. GRACE IS EVERYTHING. (brevity is the soul of wit) 1 Like |

majekdom2: Your questions aren't clear However, the oil industry requires specialist skills and there would always be recruitment gap in that industry so it's fair to conclude that graduates with good degrees from recognized/accredited institutions stand a good chance of getting employed after graduation 1 Like |

Take some time and build your career to a top notch in the US. That would enable you get a much bigger and better offer in Nigeria, then you can relocate if you so wish. Your research project is very important and if successful can land you a much better deal in the US or anywhere in the world. I would not abandon it if I were you. In any case, you are in the US legitimately, so there is no need to take desperate or panicky measures. You also have to consider the fact that you may want to go back to the US if things do not go according to your expectations in Nigeria. Would be happy or ready or able to re-start your research in US or any other similar rigorous studies all over again at that time in the future? My brother, there will always be job offers. The most important is to develop your capacity, experience. qualifications and specialist skills.......with UK/US qualifications and US citizenship, you are qualified to work anywhere in the world....and for big bucks 1 Like 1 Share |

Hi, Allow me give my opinion based on experience, current realities and all the elements you mentioned. A job of 250K will not give you near easy life style you enjoying in the USA. Our transport system is not smooth yet, You need a good vehicle to move around and it comes expensive, Banks support is there but extreme interest rate, fueling & maintenance is another leg that is critical on fund dependent. Constant power or at least 16 hours a day, though relative improvement in past weeks hoping it last long, but this is Nigeria where we are optimistic even when things are bad, at that you need at least one generator and inverter to sustain a comfortable life without stress, maintain your cooling systems and edibles. again another critical leg is fueling & maintenance which is money. Housing, unless your family owns a building where you can lay claim to an apartment, you will pay between 700k - 2m to get a comfortable apartment on the mainland since the office is situated on the Island, though the farther you go into Lagos the lower the rates, but higher cost on time & transportation hereby affecting quality of life. Home set up & bills are another related cost. Vacation & Holiday, your basic salary will not buy your ticket back to Yankee unless you buy 6 months ahead talk less of a proper vacation. Earning 250k will give you a comfortable fair life in Nigeria, but you will have to manage and squeeze a lot, especially on cost of basic amenities and infrastructure. I earned about 250K three years back and I understand what it was, don't get me wrong it is not bad to earn 250k when coming through the ranks. Thinking about all the other elements supporting your stay you have a good reason to remain where you are. To relocate you need a job that will pay you net 650k upward which is very possible with your resume, You will enjoy and explore more if you earn good money in Nigeria this I know for sure. Keep & Stay Positive Bro. 1 Like 1 Share |

I had same ish...sometime back, I did relocate back to Naija from the UK, also had another ish when wifey insisted on me staying in canada, yet I still relocated back to Naija, just visit every now and then.Truth be told , Naija is like a clay and with ones artistic ideologies backed up with the right resources , the sky remains your starting point...every other country lives a tailored lifestyle that you have to fit into else you can't function properly in it...whereas in my lovely Naija anything goes and you can create your own lil Usa/Canada/UK in it... My candid $1 advice is, check your pros and cons and weigh which favours you way more: more also, if you are a Christian put it into prayers and you will sure get the conviction of what decision you should sure hold onto...All the best. 1 Like |

Anonymous1900: I think it's easier for u to get a good job in Naija with Ur degrees and experience... But getting that residency paper may become more difficult if u let the chance slip by...my take is that after Ur research, find something doing no matter how small while u wait for that residency paper. Once u get it, u are free to make another move towards getting a job in Naija. |

It's a no brainer, stay where you are. With your double M.Sc and work experience in both UK and US and presumably another research degree forthcoming, why is the naija option as described even an option for you. Oh boy, stay where you are and work yourself up to a good career over there. A word is enough for the wise. 1 Like 1 Share |

From personal experience, 250k a month is grossly insufficient to adequately take care of your needs especially when you do get married. The offer may seem attracting but given your qualifications, it is not. You may have also incurred some cost for your current research programme; abandoning it half way is not the best of decisions. An average paying job in the US or UK will offer thrice that amount in a month. You may argue about taxes etc. The decision you make will not be a straight forward one. Depending on where you intend to live if you accept the offer, you will need to buy a car at some point, pay bills and most of all, get married. When kids start coming, that amount could barely suffice. Although you have mentioned other unnamed benefits that go with the offer - do they include car loan, house loan (outright purchase), medical, retirement package etc.? The Nigerian economy is very uncertain; corruption is our bane and may not improve in the nearest future. A lot of companies are laying off employees. An offer in the region of 700k makes much sense than the current one. You may also want to research a bit more how (often) promotion and pay raise are done in the organization and what career prospects are available... Most organizations project a global image while in essence, they are not. You can only find out when you get in. Living & working in the US may offer a different level of work experience and a guaranteed future for your kids if you have them there. You can also work for a number of years in the US and come back to invest. I think it's important you complete you programme and seek employment afterwards. You can explain to the organization that you already embarked upon a PH.D programme. Who knows, the company might require your skills at some point if you keep in touch. 1 Like 1 Share |

jaybee3: exactly! the salary is peanuts! serious peanuts like wtf ! i wonder what company this is. i have first hand information on how much shell pays entry level staff with ZERO industry related work experience and just a BEng degree. Anonymous1900 - you were'nt really specific what sector this company operates in. . . Oil and gas, Manufacturing. . . I am going to guess that its an oil and gas company. Well, for the pay you are being offered, the offer isn't worth it one bit. Besides, they wont even defer the offer till you finish your research? Seriously?!!! They seem to sound like they are doing you a favour. If they had agreed to defer the offer until you finish your research, then maybe the move might be a little appealing. If i was in your shoes, I will decline the offer and remain in the US. 1 Like 1 Share |

Anonymous1900: Bro, i admire yur acheivement so far. If was in yur golden sheos, i will do away with d 9ja job and stay in d state, obtain my residency papers, secure a job there, gain more experience there and then apply to 9ja job after a couple of years. Why will i do away with d 9ja job? Cos 250 or even more can not garanty yur sucirity+good road+power+decent accommodation+quality health care sevice+good basic amenities etc. In 9ja u spend millions to get yurself those amenities. But abroad yu pay little or nothing to get those amenities. So stay in d US, aquire more experience and i can asure yu after 5yrs of experience abroad, u can apply for job paying 20million annually. That my advise. However, pls if yu hav a means of helping me to achieve my dream of doing M.sc abroad pls dont hessitate to contact me. Peace |

Anonymous1900: Bro abeg stay US okay? U are well equip no need to rush. Finish up what you are doing if that side no favour you. U can always come back to Nigeria and get that kind of job with your qualifications, but stay in US. This country na God they help us here, safety is zero. That's my major cocnern. And the economy. So be where you have rest of mind. If I were in your shoes I would be happy I have such qualifications and live comfortably. |

Pls finish your program and you are sure to get better offers in the US. Relocate your wife and live a quality life. Naija is too unstable, even the coy is not stable too |
