oduastates:Not so enthusiastic as you maybe because I know they won't be here if they were doing so well back in the US. So they had to go looking for "New Frontier". Let's see how it goes sha; but I know small businesses will fold up in thousands. |
Re: Ambode Welcomes Walmart, Seeks Firm’s Support On Job Creation - Punch by euromoney(f): 10:22am On Jul 31, 2015 |
kenonze:Thousands of small business owners have seen their dreams of being successful entrepreneurs destroyed by the opening of Wal-Mart in their area. Small businesses are not afforded the same discounts by wholesale providers as those given to major corporations because the smaller business cannot buy the massive quantities that companies like Wal-Mart can. Therefore, they must charge higher prices for the same product thus losing patronage. Walmarts quest for low cost and price is making the company to pay least wages to its workers.infact majority of Walmarts staffs are dependent on government welfare because their wages cannot sustain them, what this implies is that the government is indirectly granting subsidies to walmart even though the company is not owned by the government. It has team of tax consultants that exploit loopholes in the tax system to make the company pay low taxes. Walmart is predatory. It gobbles mom and pop shops and run competitors out of business by use of economics of scale in its purchases.the company determines prices that suppliers will receive on the products supplied.if a supplier refuses, walmart makes generic brands, this has bankrupted many walmart suppliers or made them earn very little profit from the company. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Agimor: They're also one of the most abusive organizations. Their employees in America are advised (by the company) to apply for food-stamps because they do not want to pay them a liveable wage. They cheat their suppliers so that smaller farmers struggle to stay in business. I don't want these crooks in Nigeria. |

euromoney: This is terrible What will happen to Konga, Jumia, Growing Prince Ebeano, Blenco in Ajah etc. Why are our leaders so visionless? Nigeria neither has a welfare support for their low income citizens nor is our Labour Union working yet Ambode wants to bring another cutthroat with all the demonic Chinese and Lebanese factories we have around. O lord, save our land. |

Finally a thread where constructive criticism and display of intellectual wits abound. Reminds me of Nairaland back in the days. I will just sit back, relax and follow...very interesting debates going on here.. 4 Likes |

bukatyne: Well,my suggestion will be for the Lagos government to allocate land in the outskirts, very far from the city, maybe after Ajah/Epe or so(moreover it's only such areas you can still find such massive expanse of land to conveniently accommodate them in Lagos)that way by the time lagosians consider travel cost, travel time and huge inconvenience to the walmart, they'll find their local stores actually cheaper and rather continue 'jeje' with them. |

hahn: Walmart is world brand that is seen in developed countries with purchasing power, its a privilege to have them here, one of the indicators of development, even in China that mostly abhors foreign packaged stuffs, has numerous superstores in China, like French carrefour, lotus,Walmart competing with their local stores that don't have full foreign items like fresh Titus fish sold in carrefour can't be seen in chinese market or departmental stores, also Lipton and sardines and other stuffs, same things is applicable to Walmart in Nigeria, u get stuffs in Europewalmarts in Nigeriawalmarts that u can't see elsewhere. |

sunsewa:You can't see where you got it wrong there? You are comparing Nigeria (a developing/emerging economy) to China (an established economy). China shut their doors to foreigners TILL their locals were ready to compete with them; and then allowed them in AFTERWARDS. Nigeria is putting the cart before the horse. 4 Likes |

Eillo: Who is guilty of 'tribalism' here? Are you denying that there is a problem in Nigeria? Or have you forgotten the silly protest in Lagos earlier this year? The stupid comments from the royal idiot? Or the everyday comments that you hear in passing about Igbos? The fact is there are people engaged in commerce in Nigeria, in a big way, doing so honestly but many would prefer to overlook their hard work - why is that? |
Re: Ambode Welcomes Walmart, Seeks Firm’s Support On Job Creation - Punch by Eillo(m): 2:14pm On Jul 31, 2015 |
mmsen: That is your main point. Its a good point. So don't spoil it all by saying :"especially as many are Igbo owned". That would make your otherwise good comment tribalistic and untrue. Cheers! |

Qualer: THANK YOU. Wal-Mart and major companies like them kill small and medium. scale business. And they are going to set it up in a way that their revenue will head back home to the US. So, not much money for LASG and definite killing of jobs for Nigerians. We are celebrating this why? Cheap prices at an exorbitant costs for other business owners and their pay for workers is so lousy and they will take advantage of every tax loophole. Shoprite already exploits andnimports everything from SA. Nigerian governments should shut down foreign investment UNTIL we can compete with them or force foreign investors to sign deals that favour Nigerians in the long run (transfer of assets after a certain number of years, create a local entity, purchase 70% of goods from local suppliers), I don't know any country that was developed by foreign investment when their economy was bad (China, Japan after WWII etc). Who are the economic advisors to our govts please?? Why can't they get policies right?? 2 Likes 2 Shares |
