Good day fellow forumites and colleagues of our noble profession. Please I write to seek of certifications or extra courses I could take to position me for a job when the full privatization of the power sector kicks off. I am a graduate of elect/elect with power electronics as my major though what I am doing right now is remotely related to my course that's why I will like to beef up my knowledge in power systems. I plan taking a certification in ETAP power system management come august as I . Interested in power designs, modelling and simulation. Please your advise is highly needed. Thanks.

I don't reply to PMs, sorry.
My advice is, learn all you can about UPS and AVR, they are also a part of power electronics. Then go back to school, get good texts on power electronics and read.

Well i tried applying last year for my masters in Nigeria Defence Academy and i was told that i dint meet up to the requirment which is 3.0 CGPA.Bros, ijust need some one that can give me info on where i can get myself trained, since most jobs i applied for are saying i'm inexperience. at least i just want to start from somewhere;ie, get trained, get a job,and probably go for my masters.

dude, you went about it the wrong way, why would you be applying to NDA for masters? sey you wan become soldier ni? if you want to do a masters with your GP in naija then you could try putting in for a PGD first, that ought to give you a chance to boost your GP.

As for the training bit, I really dont get that part, if you're applying for starter positions your experience (or lack of it) wouldn't be an issue, your grasp of the fundamentals would be a lot more important. Maybe your approach to the job search needs tweeking...my two cents

hello everyone, i have read thru all comments and i must say that the trend in electrical engineering is really becoming so wide. Let me also say that i am a graduate of electrical/electronics engineering(majored in Power/Machine option) from Auchi Polytechnic, i graduated in 2009 with an Upper-Credit, and when i went for service in 2010 in Maiduguri, Borno State. I attended some lectures in the University of Maiduguri, and i must say being an engineering is good, but come to think of it we build, they occupy, but our renumeration and recognition is not significant, well that's topic for anytym. I went into the university anyway to study a new course which was only offered in six geo-political universities nationwide, PGD DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT.If u ask why the trend of today has necessitated this move from being an electrical engineering to a disaster manager, note Safety is part of engineering, which was the reason i did it. This program was initiated by NEMA, but even until date haven't offered employment to anybody. My point is that you need to be abreast with the trend and follow, gone are the days of acquiring computer certifications, then came the banking sector and so on, now its about environment, safety and health, tomorrow something else would come up. So fellow engineers and aspirants the economy doesn't really give you an option. Am still out here now, going thru several interviews for job. Allow me humor you a bit, EMEKA IKE the NOLLYWOOD ACTOR STUDIED ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING, BUT TODAY HE IS A MOVIE DIRECTOR/ACTOR.

There are lots of books. I don't know what people are reading these days, but I started from Horowitz and Hill's The Art Of Electronics.
It's a good, practical-oriented book.

@Rhynne,
You've waited for so long before you realised that it's a mirage for an Engineeer to pursue non-professional career in a banking Sector.
In response to your quest for professionalism, with your grade you can do your MSc in Elect in Unilag unhindered. Form usually comes out around March / April of every year.
What you need right now is the transition job/training. Your emphasy right away should be on skills acquistion, no matter what. You can start by undergoing training with the CREDIBLE ORGANIZATIONS, the likes of Siemens Power Academy, AETI. If you think you can't afford these then in my view you'll have to go the hard way by attaching yourself to credible organization paherps without pay. You can as well opt for contract ones, but make sure it is highly technical, the pay may not be what you expect but it will pay out, you may be surprised that these will be done for less than six month. The worst you can do is to be idle. Mostly important be determined, pray with the sincerity of purpose and God willing success will be yours.
Good luck.

Good evening to you and all the experienced hands (mentors)here. I'm in dire need of your advice here.

My Boss is already planing to retire and go back to east by december this year as he's about finishing his factory in the east and i advised myself that i wont continue in this line of business cos i've looked at this industry and discovered that fuel importation won't last beyond 2015.
So i decided that i need an option B. Grabbing a skill in power/machhinery engineering won't be a bad idea cos of the privatisation and unbundling of PHCN. It may be like the Telecom job opportunity boom we had when GSM companies started in 9ja.

I've made some inquiries about Siemens power academy, i was told that i'll start with a 3months course and the fees are N800,000. Now my question is, IS IT WORTH IT? Do you know how their program is (I.e is it really hands on practical program cos that is what i really need) and will employers want to employ me if they see Siemens power academy in my cv?

I need to be sure before paying. Thanks

Nobody can say for sure. But doing it is sure better than not doing it.
I would recommend that you go for it. Go a step further and do a little research about what's currently going on in that power sector. There are lots of IPPs (independent power projects) all across the nation, and I am sure they would be looking for hands-on people, as opposed to the regular Nigerian graduate with lots of certificates and zero skill. Go for it.

Hello house! I'm a graduate of Uiport Elect/Elect 2:2 and planing of doing my masters in FUTO.
I just have one problem...choosing the right career path. I did a bit of each Telecoms; Electronics and Power as my electives so i won't find it too difficult to adapt to any field, I'm not just sooo sure if I can handle the strain of Power which I'm inclined to and honestly, is the next big thing just like our communication sector. Pls I wud appreciate any candid advice you can offer especially in the Power sector. Thanks
