Mercedes already has its updated Immendingen Technology and Testing Center ready

Mercedes is in the process of converting its playground located in Immendingen, Germany, into a development center for future technologies, that is, electric and autonomous cars. Known as the Mercedes-Benz Testing and Technology Center, it covers about 520 hectares and includes dozens of tracks, whose designs were executed by Hermann Tilke, author of some Formula 1 circuits. After three and a half years of construction, the Immendingen Testing and Technology Center officially opened its doors in September 2018. The town of Immendingen is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg, 130 kilometers south of Stuttgart and 40 kilometers north of Radolfzell, on Lake Constance. It will be the new home where the brand’s future technologies will have more than 30 test and evaluation sections.

Among them there are different types of roads and signs that are found throughout the world to ensure that Mercedes autonomous driving systems can be tested in multiple regions. Examples of the types of roads include steep and narrow passageways as in the Alps, wide and multi-lane roads as in North America, and tedious traffic of stops and exits as in the main European cities. A lot of traffic situations can be realistically simulated in the test area. Everybody can calculate a lot through a computer, but in the end driving tests on appropriate roads we find that reality always has surprises that the computer has not considered.

MINI John Cooper Works GP 2020: teeny but bully

We dreamed of the launch of the new John Cooper Works GP 2020 MINI since we saw that first prototype two years ago. The most radical version of the MINI 3 doors was only a matter of time. Now it has finally been presented at the Los Angeles Hall and its arrival is announced in March 2020. As was already known, it is a limited edition of 3,000 units that will be manufactured at the brand’s Oxford plant.

The name John Cooper Works has always been synonymous with maximum sportsmanship and the addition of the acronym GP refers to how appropriate it is for circuit. In fact, you could say that this copy is the most performance that the brand has ever launched. He wants to leave behind his predecessor in every way and for this he assembles the most powerful MINI mechanics, the same that we have already seen in other copies such as the Clubman John Cooper Works or the Countryman John Cooper Works. The new MINI John Cooper Works GP develops 306 HP and 450 Nm of torque. The only downside we get that is only available with the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, so there will be no option to mount a manual transmission in this version. Despite this, its performance is quite outstanding, since it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.2 seconds and reaching a maximum speed of 265 km / h. It is striking that the Clubman and Countryman John Cooper Works accelerate faster because they carry all4 all-wheel drive, while this is forward (although it has mechanical differential lock).

The familiar Ford Mustang that could have been and did not come to fruition

We already know the Ford Mustang Mach-E. A car that bears the mythical pony car logo and at the same time has four doors, moves with electricity and can have all-wheel drive. Not to mention its interior, closer to that of a Tesla Model 3 than to any model of the brand. Does this lead us to think that maybe there is a family, within the brand, of Mustang with different bodies?

It is the first time that Mustang horses feed on electricity instead of gasoline, but the idea of creating a Mustang with a more familiar look is not new. At the beginning of the 60s it was experimented with numerous Mustang prototypes that never reached production. There were from two-seaters to a four-door sedan in 1963. The meninges continued to squeeze even after the first Ford Mustang was launched in 1964. So much so that they even shuffled a shooting brake in 1966.

Like the fact that Robert Cumberford asked to finance the development of a Ford Mustang familiar, using one of the first coupes of the production line. The design had so much in the market that many dreamed of doing things using it as a base.

The next Bugatti could be an electric one of less than one million euros

Bugatti is one of those manufacturers that do not follow trends. They have been with their 8.0-liter W16 mechanics since 2005, with the launch of the Bugatti Veyron. While it is true that it has received modifications in its substitute, the Bugatti Chiron, the essence remains. Although the strict emission regulations that are in the making seem to also change the mindset of Molsheim. In fact, it seems that Bugatti will have an electric car to expand its range.

We already talked about the future of the brand going through electrification and that it would make them rethink the strategy around W16. But now we are referring to a second model that would add to the current Chiron and that would occupy a lower place within the range. If the hyper car exceeds more than two million euros in price, the electric future would be positioned as an access vehicle, since its price would be between 500,000 and one million euros.

The formula to follow is still unclear, but in this format great four-seater tourism or even an SUV would make sense. Both possibilities would make some sense and have been taken into account by Bugatti. On the one hand there is the Bugatti 16C Galibier prototype that they launched a decade ago and that was going to lead to a production sedan. On the other, the possibility of making a crossover has been making sense in recent years with the launch of models such as the Bentley Bentayga, the Lamborghini Urus or the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Lexus UX 300e: all the details of the first electric of the brand

Lexus has already taken the most important step towards an electrified future because it has just launched its first model with this type of propulsion system. He does it after presenting the Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept prototype a few weeks ago, the vision they have of their electric by 2030. But there is still a decade left for that, so for now we will have to keep the Lexus UX 300e, the Electric version of this small SUV.

The truth is that it was the most logical movement, taking advantage of a copy seated on the GA-C platform, which stands out for its modularity. In fact, it has not been too difficult to incorporate a new electrical mechanic in the front axle instead of the 250h hybrid propulsion system (which we tested recently). This is the top of the range thanks to its 204 hp and 300 Nm of torque, which leave behind the 184 hp that the hybrid achieved.

The other element that becomes important in the Lexus UX 300e is the lithium-ion battery with 54.3 kWh capacity. Thanks to it, the SUV is able to reach a range of 400 kilometers, a value that has been calculated according to the previous NEDC cycle, so it will be reduced in reality. This battery accepts loads of up to 6.6 kW in alternating current and can reach up to 50 kW in fast charges with direct current.

Toyota FC-X 80 Concept: good ideas in a little graceful container

The Toyota FCX-80 Concept was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1979. The idea of the Japanese manufacturer was to offer the public an urban vehicle in the form of an experimental prototype. It was compact on the outside, wide on the inside, light overall and little thirsty for fuel. On paper, the idea made sense. It offered some innovative features and interesting ideas. The prototype really fulfilled the objectives that the company had planned, and that is why it can be said that it is one that the result was not very graceful. Automotive history has taught us that, on many occasions, meaningful ideas have been the least visually appealing (see Fiat Multipla, for example).

The sharp angle of the hood merged with the windshield of the passenger compartment which, in broad strokes, was like a glazed dome. A sheath was mounted on the short, inclined front to integrate the headlights and the air intakes of the engine. It is perhaps at this point where we can see the first incongruity at the aesthetic level, the asymmetry. The design consists of two basic points: the proportions and the symmetry, and the front of the Toyota FCX-80 Concept has none of them.

The side view stands out for the straight cuts, in line with what the stylistic canons of the 70s and 80s marked. In order to increase visibility and the feeling of spaciousness on board, the waist line is separated on two levels through a pair of double height windows. The concept is attractive, especially now that the waistline of current cars is quite high, but the result does not inspire desire.
