Think about how good this LEGO Fiat 500 would look on your desktop

If you are one of those who like popular classic car designs and appreciate riding things with your own hands, then this LEGO Creator Expert model that has taken the iconic Fiat 500 as inspiration could be for you, whether you are a young enthusiast or a nostalgic old man. And although it is mostly made of plastic bricks, it stands out as a mid-60s model (a 1965 500F).

The 960-piece kit is 11 centimeters high, 24 cm long and 11 cm wide, which means it will take up significant space on your desk. LEGO recreated the proportions of the 500 with great precision, and its designers included details such as the round headlights, the chrome emblem on the front, the plate-shaped hubcaps and the ventilated rear bonnet. It’s not as realistic as a die-cast model, but it’s recognizable as a 500.

It also comes with a luggage rack – and its respective hinged suitcase – and a highly detailed interior, while the roof (fabric and folding), the doors, the hood (where the fuel tank and spare wheel are hidden) and the tailgate (with its small air-cooled engine) are practicable. To complete the Italian flavor, LEGO also shows a small “painting” of the car in front of the Colosseum in Rome, along with a folding easel and a brush.

LEGO Creator Expert Construction Kits are for passionate adults and teens. From classic car models, buildings, and just about anything you can think of, LEGO’s advanced sets offer a world of nostalgia, self-expression, enjoyment and surprise. Kids sometimes use them as toys too!

The technologies that mount the new autonomous cars of Waymo

Waymo is one of those companies that continue to explore this particular field of autonomous cars. It is a subsidiary of Google (Alphabet rather) that has spent years developing technologies of this type and that have a driverless taxi service in some parts of the United States. Now they announce what is their fifth generation of autonomous cars, which release technologies to be even more advanced and safe than ever.

The Jaguar I-Pace has been the vehicle chosen by Waymo to expand its fleet, since they ordered no less than 20,000 units of the first electric of the British brand. They look somewhat different because they introduce a new set of sensors to enhance their capabilities. The first has been the new 360º LIDAR, which is capable of generating a 3D image of the entire environment and which has a range of 300 meters. It is a key system to identify other cars, cyclists or pedestrians regardless of the light conditions.

To this new LIDAR are added another four perimeters, which are placed in the corners of the vehicle (front and rear wheel arches) to complete the viewing angle and improve resolution at short range. Cameras are also protagonists in these fifth-generation freelancers from Waymo. Thanks to new long-range cameras and the 360-vision system, it is able to identify pedestrians and signs more than 500 meters away.

There are new systems for perimeter vision (to better identify objects) and peripheral vision (to reduce blind spots caused by other vehicles). The Jaguar I-Pace are completed with radars, which are responsible for the measurement of the speed and trajectory of other objects even with adverse weather conditions. The new generation of Waymo are also capable of seeing objects at great distances, increasing the available reaction time.

RUF Rodeo Concept, a tribute to the Porsche 911 Safari

RUF is a small carmaker that had always been popular for its reinterpretations of the Porsche 911. Although it goes without saying that they no longer use their platforms. Currently they have a carbon fiber monocoque that is used by the RUF CTR and RUF SCR, the most recent launches of the brand. Now it is also assembled by the RUF Rodeo Concept, a most curious prototype that could go into production in the future.

It maintains that link with the Stuttgart brand, in this case with a clear inspiration in the Porsche 911 Safari. That specimen that was prepared for the competition has been replicated by RUF, always giving its vision and its own style. What strikes the most at first glance is the adventurous aesthetic, with that elevated suspension and Michelin-signed off-road tires shimmering those eye-catching gold rims.

They match the bodywork in two colors, with that combination of green and gold. It looks like something out of a western movie with that metal protection with a rope in the front, additional headlights, a luggage rack with leather cases on the roof and even a shovel in the back, on the engine cover. The interior uses brown leather upholstery with a really attractive look and patterns that evoke the classic.

The RUF Rodeo Concept is expected to ride the same mechanics as the other models in the range in the rear position. It would be a six-cylinder boxer, atmospheric and with 510 CV if it uses the one of the SCR or biturbo and with 700 CV if it uses the one of the CTR. What is different about this prototype is that power goes to all four wheels to ensure its capabilities off the road. Also striking is the rotary knob on the center console to adjust the torque distribution between the axles. In any case, it is still early to know whether this prototype will go into production or is it a simple design exercise.

The Audi Q5 launches micro hybrid diesel versions of access to the range

With current regulations and the objectives that manufacturers have to meet, it is vitally important that they reduce their emissions with more efficient and environmentally friendly technologies. In addition to that, there are many cities that have restrictions and in which it benefits to have an ECO label that gets some advantages. Taking these factors into account, the new micro hybrid diesel versions of the Audi Q5 hit the market.

Since the launch in 2017 of the current Audi Q5, we have always praised its wide mechanical range, with all kinds of options. It was recently completed with the Q5 TFSI quattro, the 367 hp plug-in hybrid with a label of 0. Now they are looking to add below access versions that use the Mild Hybrid technology, so popular in the brand with the four rings, to earn the sought ECO label and be more efficient than before.

On the one hand appears the Audi Q5 35 TDI S tronic with 163 HP and front-wheel drive (before access came with quattro drive), which promises an approved consumption of between 5.6 and 6.2 l / 100km thanks to new technology. The benefits are not very outstanding, but it already manages to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 9 seconds and a maximum speed of 213 km / h. In addition, with a price of 45,050 euros, it is up to 10% cheaper than the previous entry version.

New Porsche 911 Turbo S cost no electricity

Porsche introduced the top-end road version of the Turbo S 911 model 992 coupe and cabriolet. Of course, the supercar has become faster and more powerful than its predecessor: 650 hp. and 2.7 s to “hundreds”.

While many modern super- and hypercars are switching to hybrid powertrains, Porsche is in no hurry to vaccinate its most legendary model: according to the latest unofficial data, the production of hybrid 911s will not begin until the generation change expected in 2026, that is, the 992 series will not affect electrification.

Thus, the new 911 Turbo S is a classic gasoline supercar, which nonetheless incorporates all the latest Porsche technical achievements. The vehicle with the previous working volume of 3.8 liters produces a maximum of 650 hp. and 800 Nm, which is 70 hp and 50 Nm more than its predecessor. The increase in productivity was achieved due to new, larger turbochargers with variable geometry of the guide apparatus (the right and left impellers now rotate in different directions to optimize gas exchange), a new fuel injection system and a more efficient four-channel intake system. Overpressure valves are now controlled by stepper motors.

The gearbox is an 8-speed “robot” with two clutches instead of the previous 7-speed. The all-wheel drive system with an internal multi-plate clutch can now transmit up to 500 Nm to the front wheels. The acceleration time to 100 km / h was reduced by 0.2 s to 2.7 s, the acceleration time to 200 km / h was reduced by a second to 8.9 s, and the maximum speed was 320 km / h.

Luxurious Buick minivan became four-seater: there is a bedside table, in competitors – Lexus

The American brand has declassified the interior of the serial top-end version of the GL8 monocab. In addition, another new modification has been announced.

The Buick GL8 minivan is available only in China, production is also established there. The model of the current, third, generation debuted there in 2016 (it is exclusively seven-seater), that is, it’s time for restyling. The harbinger of the updated MPV – a four-seater concept – was presented last spring in Shanghai. Then, the Chinese Ministry of Industry revealed the appearance of a product restyled model, and did it twice: in November 2019 they published a photo of the standard GL8, and last month there were pictures of a refreshed luxury version of Avenir.

In February, we learned that a minivan with a passenger compartment for four will become serial. And finally, Buick shared a signature image of the interior of the new top-end option.

So, the most expensive GL8 armchairs got from last year’s concept, and they also retained the blue-beige finish. The front panel is also from the show car – with the integrated virtual “tidy” and touchscreen of the multimedia system, plus an upgraded air conditioning control unit. But from the stand for wine, which the prototype was a continuation of the armrest box located between the front seats, they refused. But between the rear seats appeared a bedside table, it has two compartments at the end and one on top. Each of the passengers of the second row also has their own touch panel – apparently, it controls the “climate”, massager and electric seats. On the tablet, they probably also built it into the backs of the front seats.

Aston Martin V12 Speedster: a road fighter without a windshield

Aston Martin continues to develop a series of winged aircraft-related models: its brightest representative debuted this week – the V12 Speedster two-seater supercar with a unique carbon-fiber body that does not have a roof and a windshield.

Previous Aston Martin flirting with aviation within the Wings Series was limited to the exclusive decor of existing models: Vanquish S Red Arrows Edition, Vantage Blades Edition, V12 Vantage S Spitfire 80 and DBS Superleggera Concorde were embroidered in this format. But the V12 Speedster is a special case: in terms of technology, this is a combined hodgepodge of components and assemblies from the Vantage and DBS Superleggera models, but the body is completely original, made of carbon fiber and painted in the original color of the American F / A-18 carrier-based fighter, which was obtained Boeing approval. Mention of the famous winged car in the form of decals can also be found on the thresholds and the central jumper of the body, which separates the driver and passenger seats.

Carbon-fiber helmets, without which riding in such a car can be a deadly ride, are stored in wave-like fairings behind individual safety arches. The rear spoiler is elegantly integrated into the body and incorporating lights. 21-inch forged wheels are attached to the hubs with one central nut. Through their thin knitting needles, you can see carbon-ceramic brakes with a diameter of 410 mm in front and 360 mm in the rear.

The design of the V12 Speedster cockpit uses a whole collection of original details that other Aston Martin models do not have: a leather case with red ribbons of fasteners in the glove compartment, decorative straps on the central tunnel and door handles, metal vertically oriented air ducts and the like trifle. Instead of a windshield, two individual carbon visors are installed, directing air over the heads of riders. The screen of the multimedia system in case of rain will be covered by the very central partition between the seats.

Toyota 86 Black Limited, a nod to the past that stays in Japan

The Toyota GT86 is one of the few pure sports cars that we can find in the current market. The Japanese powered coupe is proof that you don’t need brutal power to have a good time. During its test we already mentioned that this copy looked back on the past and paid tribute to the legendary Corolla AE86 from the 80s. Now there is an even more nostalgic special edition, the Toyota 86 Black Limited that unfortunately will only go on sale in Japan.

In this case the inspiration is very clear, it refers to the last special edition of the AE86 Sprinter Trueno, which was named GT Apex Black Limited. Hence, it appears with the body in that striking black color, with 17-inch wheels in bronze and stripes in the same tone to contrast. The spoiler is also in black, while the Brembo brake system calipers (with four pistons in front and two in the rear) are painted red.

In the interior the same trend is also followed, with black as the protagonist and with some golden touches. From this part we must highlight the sports seats with leather and Alcantara upholstery that are heated. Also mention that some parts of the dashboard and doors are covered in a fabric called Granlux. The atmospheric 2.0-liter four-cylinder mechanics with two configurations on the Japanese market do not change.

What gives the third row of seats, installed in the opposite direction to the movement of the car?

Having a rear-facing seat set was relatively common in cars for quite some time. In fact, it was quite popular from the 50s and 60s, especially in large vehicles such as family cars or, as they were known in ordinary conversations of the past, “the ranches”. The current trend is to have the rear seats facing forward, as this seems to be the default design for three-row SUVs, although there are still some brands that mount them in reverse forward (unless your thing is circular gear behind). The Tesla Model S may be the best-known example, but Mercedes-Benz still offers a pair of seats with a view toward the trunk door in its E-Class Estate.

From the early days of automotive marketing, the third row of seats was shown as an important feature. They weren’t for truck parents. They were more for the heads of families who had children, but they were not so interested in having to interact with them in the car. With the third row, the children had their own space, roughly a soccer field from where mom and dad were in the front seat, smoking their cigarettes.

Across the pond, when cars began to shrink in size in the 1970s as a result of the first oil crisis, the third row disappeared in most models. By the time big vehicles came back into fashion, minivans, and later SUVs, were much more popular. However, in Europe, the characteristic was maintained longer, since family members were not replaced in the same way that the US did.

Very soon we’ll see the new Lotus Esprit with hybrid V6 engine

Lotus is one of those niche manufacturers that stays old-fashioned. Their cars stand out for their low weight and the sensations they offer, as Colin Chapman always wanted, although it is true that they are becoming somewhat obsolete. If we take a look at its range, the platform of the Lotus Exige/Elise exceeds a decade of life, just like that of the Lotus Evora. While the British are working on a new architecture, there is already talk of the arrival of a Lotus Esprit as a transition model.

The use of this mythical name is not yet confirmed, but what seems clear is that it would use the current platform and that it would go into production next year. Before new generations of all Lotus models arrive, already seated on the new platform, they will launch a mid-engine sports car that will have features in common with the Evora, but which will debut a new powertrain that will set the tone for the future of the brand.

Until now most of the firm’s models used a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine of Toyota origin. But now they are going to separate from the Japanese in this regard and are going to make a new hybrid V6 using the experience gained thanks to being in the same conglomerate as Geely and Volvo. With the addition of an electrified system, it could reach a power of around 500 hp, keeping the weight low and adapting to the current strict emission regulations.

Masks and respirators: how the auto industry helps curb the coronavirus

The global pandemic has caught us all by surprise. The disease is not fatal by itself, but it puts our health system in check with the concentration of cases in a short period of time, since we have no immunity: it is a new disease. All aid is scant and the auto industry is responding.

As in Europe, Chinese factories had to close to stop the pandemic. By the end of January BYD (Build Your Dreams, the world’s largest producer of electric vehicles), had to stop its production. But the Eastern philosophy of supporting the group is very different from the current one and they decided to support the country by manufacturing face masks that would serve to protect the population.

Wang Chuanfu, the president of the company, set up a team of managers from the different divisions and no less than 3,000 engineers. At the end of January, they began to assemble the facilities and now produce 5,000,000 units daily. Production grows between 300,000 and 500,000 units every 24 hours.

The speed with which the production line has been designed and commissioned is amazing. 90% of it has been created by BYD, as indicated by the brand. And it is that in just one day between five and ten mask machines are added to the production. Also, in less than two weeks the company managed to put hundreds of thousands of liters of disinfectants on the market, something that usually costs two weeks.
