When Salvador Dalí painted (and promoted) the Datsun 610 Wagon

Salvador Dalí has ​​been one of the most charismatic artists in the history of Spain and also worldwide. Considered one of the greatest representatives of surrealism, many of his works are etched in the minds of most of society. Although Dalí was not a great driver (his chauffeur Artur Caminada or his wife Gala used to take him), he did feel a certain fascination with the world of motorsports. Now we are going to tell you the peculiar story it had with the Datsun 610 Wagon.

Dalí had represented cars in some of his works such as Bañista (1924), Soledad paranoico-crítica (1935) or Automóviles vestidos (1941); but always with its marked style and peculiar point of view. However, in 1972 he received a very different commission from the previous one. Japanese manufacturer Datsun (owned by Nissan) wanted to advertise one of its models that was to land on the American market and commissioned four renowned painters to interpret it. One of them was Salvador Dalí.

As can be seen in the original advertisement, Dalí painted the Datsun 610 Wagon on a deformed watch, a resource well known for the painting The Persistence of Memory (1931). The truth is that the vehicle does not appear too integrated in the box, as it seems an addition without much sense. Despite this, on a commercial level it fulfilled its function and we assume that the painter would receive a large sum of money for the work. The original is currently in the Salvador Dalí Museum in Petersburg, Florida, as Nissan gave it to him a few years ago.

And related to this economic aspect, Salvador Dalí also received a vehicle as part of the payment for this advertisement. The brand gave him a Datsun 180B Wagon in orange, a striking-looking familiar that was not often seen in Spain. The curious thing is that this car can currently be visited, since it is exposed in the Castle of Púbol. Although it had been used by the painter’s service and later abandoned in the haystack, Fundación Gala – Salvador Dalí bought and restored it for its exhibition.

Dalí’s curious relationship with Datsun did not end there. In addition to painting that 610 Wagon for the print media, an advertisement for television was also filmed. This spot shows the family car entering the Persistence of memory box (which becomes the common thread) and later the painter doing some of its characteristic poses and showing the benefits of the vehicle. Hyundai Veloster N 2020, now with automatic transmission

The Hyundai Veloster is that peculiar Korean coupe that earned a place in our memories for its asymmetric body, with a door on one side and two on the other. Although the previous generation was sold in Europe, the truth is that the current generation focuses on markets such as Korean or the United States and is not present in Europe. And it is a real shame we consider versions such as the Hyundai Veloster N 2020 that has just been presented.

The sports variant has been around until now, but it receives an interesting update. To date, the 275 bhp 2.0 Turbo four-cylinder engine could only go with a six-speed manual gearbox. However, the model now receives the eight-speed dual-clutch N DCT automatic transmission. Thanks to it they improve their benefits considerably.

The new automatic Hyundai Veloster N announces an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.6 seconds, which is an improvement of half a second compared to the previous manual (it did in 6.1 seconds). It should be noted that this transmission has several systems that will be interesting. The N Grin Shift (NGS) increases torque by 7%, from the original 353 Nm to 378 Nm, temporarily for 20 seconds to generate “a smile for the driver”.

It also has the N Power Shift (NPS), a system that is activated when full throttle (more than 90%) so that there is no reduction in torque and always reaches maximum power to the wheels. On the other hand, the N Track Sense Shift (NTS) is automatically activated when conditions are optimal and allows for more successful gear timing. Other functionalities such as Rev Matching, Launch Control or Overboost remain as before; that were already present.

The interior of the Hyundai Veloster N also improves thanks to the N Light Sports seats, optional buckets that are upholstered in Alcantara and hold the driver better than the standard ones. They also help save 2kg per seat and feature details such as the illuminated N logo on the top of the backrest. It will maintain the infotainment system with an 8-inch screen, the JBL sound system or a generous list of driving aids with the Hyundai SmartSense.

Some car manufacturers also have their divisions for truck manufacturing. Two of the best known are Mercedes (Daimler) and Volvo, who are precisely the protagonists of this news. This week there was information about a completely new generation of the Japanese sedan, on the basis of which we made up our mind about how the new product will look.

The current “six” of the third generation appeared in 2012, becoming the serial version of the Mazda Takeri concept, shown at the end of 2011. By the standards of the current auto industry, the model is a long-lived, during the production, it went through two significant restyling – in 2015 and 2018.

Now we are waiting for a completely new car, which will be built on a rear-wheel drive platform (its development became known a year ago). This means that the “six” will be noticeably changed externally, at least in terms of proportions. So, the wheelbase will become larger, and the front axle will move forward. Probably, the hood will become longer, this is the option presented on our renderings.

While there are no spy photos of the future news, so we can only focus on the styling of the Mazda Vision Coupe concept, which was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in the fall of 2017. A larger radiator grill will certainly appear in front, which will visually be combined with narrow headlights.

Sidewalls can become simpler in form, as opposed to the current “six” with its noticeable stampings on the wings and doors. We performed the rear part in the style of the above concept: here are the lamps of the original form, consisting of a pair of round elements and horizontal LED strips that fit together with them, as well as a license plate niche that has moved to the bumper. In addition to the rear-wheel drive platform, the new Mazda 6 will receive longitudinally mounted 6-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The “world” Tiguan PHEV specifications may be different (for example, the total power of the new Golf GTE – 245 hp). It has been baptized as Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) and it has been developed in two different variants. It is a replacement that could be installed in both those classics with original 1-DIN or 2-DIN radii. Both have a high-resolution touchscreen and full connectivity.
