Common sense is not common
Power bank is not made for body contact
While charging, it loses energy in form of heat.
our body produce heat, when both are in contact, it overheat.
most of them don't have over heating protection.
When the charging IC overheat, it burns and create short circuit, hence the fire.

Those things can be damn very hot. It's not advisable to have them on your body anyway. When charging your phone with power bank, always leave them on surface clear away from your body. Safety first.

They do... It's common with inverters too..

As long as they use lithium battery there's a chance of explosion and fire

This reminds me of some old phone battery that swells when overcharged. Sorry for the accident. I think the best is to buy reputable power bank brands like romoss and newage. You may not have such issue with them. They have their reputation to protect.

Be careful, not only power banks do this even phone.... It is not advisable to put stuffs like that in your pocket especially on hot afternoons.... Either you hold them or buy a jacket that has a hanger to hang them on your belt, where air can reach them........ and also be careful when using your phone with Internet and charging when it gets hot just off the data or unplug the charger, you can always reply that message later

I'd rather go phoneless than buy power bank. I have never made use of power bank and won't dare buy it.

I concur. Some phones can be disastrous when charging and using at the same time. Don't sleep over your phone on the bed, while charging it. people can be electrocuted.
