Federal govts move by technically stopping importation of dried fish brands into the nation is a welcome development. This move is expected to help boost the local capacity various government experts have said trying to defend the policy that was not made public afterall. I think it is a good move as this nation has gradually became a dumping ground to anything anywhere in the world. Products that are prohibited from being circulated in its country of production find their ways very easily to this part of the world, an Australian friend once told me.
But i have some grouses with this policy as this policy also has affected importation of feed inputs and concentrates. What do i mean? Go to bank and fill form M for importation of fish meal etc, you will not get any dollar for your import meaning that you source your dollar from the black market if actually you want to import.
The implication is that the cost of these inputs needed to build the local capacity would not come cheap again helping smuggling of the feed brands and fish brands already coming from outside.
Today local capacity in feed formulation is still behind the global par.
