In Defence Of Buhari And Photo News About Him

It is now a common thing to see comments on social media complaining about the excessive display of photography by the administration of president Muhammadu Buhari. One thing such persons have failed to do is channel their complaints to the right circle.

Every administration from the time of independence has been involved in picture taking. These pictures serve has record keeping and also photo news for the press. In the part of record keeping, it helps to remind generations of past events that shaped current happenings. We have seen throwback pictures of former military president Obasanjo and the then US president Jimmy Carter together, Abacha, Tinubu and MKO together, Obj and buhari as petroleum minister etc. When those events took place, newspaper covers where probably awashed with such pictures.

These days, information dissemination has broaden its horizon beyond just print and TV/Audio media. Information now reach people faster through social media which consists of blogs, facebook, twitter, instagram, online forums etc. Pictures of the event that took place during PMB's visit to Obama can easily be lifted off the website of the Federal Ministry of Information by the countless numbers of bloggers and online news outlets we have these days. These blogs are only concerned about what's trendy, and a person of President Buhari is a huge discussion anytime anyday.

When these blogs see another blog with photo news of Dangote's meeting with PMB, they copy and paste it on theirs. They do that just to increase traffic to their website, cos the names Buhari and Dangote are huge keywords that are frequently searched for on search engines like google and yahoo. These pictures aren't always taken by the president's personal photographers. Members of Dangote's entourage might be behind the photography which they upload on his twitter handle. A man of Dangote's status will definitely have million twitter followers out of which thousands will be bloggers.

The past administration led by former president Goodluck Jonathan was also immersed in photo display which is a norm for any government. We saw pictures of him and the drone built by Nigeria. We saw details of his trips to Jerusalem. We saw his journey to different churches. We saw pictures of he and Nollywood actors including musicians. I now wonder why certain circles wail so much about the photos we see of PMB as if they are selfies taken by him.

Any administration whose activities get displayed as photo news by media outlets can be termed a popular administration. When former president Goodluck Jonathan saw that his popularity was fast dwindling before the general elections, he came down to lagos the centre of excellence to pay 25 bloggers to help boost his popularity as reported by some media. That was when we started seeing pictures of he and his wife at the gym, pictures of him racing on a track, he and singer sheyi shay, pictures of his meeting with Yoruba Obas, picture of him in an ogboni attire. I can bet it that those stunts of his helped him gain his required 25% in the sophisticated SW states.

I'll simply advice those who can't wait for PMB to fail to go back to the drawing board and think of how to be a better opposition, not the one that sees photo news about this administration as an opportunity to wail.
