Halliburton: Atiku has case to answer -Obasanjo

LAGOS — Recent reconciliation by former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar with his former boss, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo notwithstanding, the ex-president yesterday said that he(Atiku) had questions to answer on the Halliburton scandal, adding he(Obasanjo) had been given a clean bill of health by both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission,  ICPC.

Chief Obasanjo who spoke on a BBC programme monitored in Lagos yesterday evening, added that there was no proof of corruption levelled at him while in office and after.

Reacting to one of the questions by  BBC’s Stephen Sackur, he challenged anyone or group that had any evidence of corruption against him to come forward with it and he would defend it anywhere.

On his daughter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo Bello’s involvement in the alleged N300 million scam at the Federal Ministry of Health, Chief Obasanjo said that she was old enough to defend herself . "A 42-yr old girl is old enough to defend herself," he said.

It will be recalled that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar recently shocked the nation with a visit to his former boss at his Hilltop Mansion in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital for a reconciliation.

In the heat of the crisis generated by the quarrel between the two towards the end of their tenure in 2007, Alhaji Atiku dumped the ruling PDP and contested the 2007 elections as presidential candiadte of the opposition Action Congress, AC.

Obasanjo’s name is frequently mentioned in relation with many scandals that various committees of the National Assembly are investigating. Some of them include the sale of government houses to notable Nigerians, while the power sector is where he has drawn most odium.

Earlier in the week, the House of Representatives Committee began debate on the report of its committee set up to probe the power sector.

Committee chairman, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu had told the House as part of the findings that about $13.28 billion was spent on the power sector between 1999 and 2007 with almost no value to show for it. “Many strange things happened in the power sector during that time”, he had told the House.

“There were instances where contracts were inflated by over 1,000% and there was abuse of due process.There were some contractors who were fully paid in advance of some projects, but never visited their sites”, he said.

The Committee then made 88 recommendations, among them that former President Olusegun Obasanjo and others be prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for what went wrong in the power sector at that time.

Server34,
this is not a newspaper issue rather the poster is a pro-obj.

@poster,
the sentence is not complete. everybody knows that atiku is a common criminal while obj is a common saint.
atiku became a criminal the day he disagree with third term agenda. nigerians are very funny in their reasonings. imagine two great criminals who have been holding nigeria hostage since 1999 and all of a sudden, one become a common criminal and the other a common saint.
