We attended the just concluded 2015 IYF(International Youth Fellowship) World Youth Camp in University of Ghana, Legon Ghana from 31st of July - 4th August, and because we arrived late at night we were given temporary accommodations for that night pending registration the next day. However, they took us to Elizabeth Francis Hall(hostel) where we were given a room.

At first, i thought it was the usual Nigerian public Universities with dilapidated structures; Dirty and flooded bathroom with no functional water taps, rooms without foams, no table and chairs, no fan, dirty walls, dirty floor, e.t.c.

But we got the ultimate surprises of our life, behold the rooms we were given was well painted with white paint i repeat sparkling spotless white paint, two bunk beds with school made foams, four tables and chairs obviously for four students, well designed wardrobe for each students, a toilet and bathroom with water running through the taps, a ceiling fan, tiled floors, fire alarm, private balcony to spread your clothes e.t.c almost or equivalent to what i saw in one Busan University in South Korea when i attended 2014 IYF World Youth Camp in Busan.

Chai!! I don die, see Ghana Ghana wey no get oyel pass us, come get pass better university pass us.

In fact, holistically we stand a better chance than Ghana but how they come get better facilities pass us. Ghanians i beg make una understand. no offense.

No wonder foreigner students full the University.

The next day we register and were given rooms in ISHI(International Students Hostel), the setting is different from the previous hostel. It has two beds with the school made foams, two designed wardrobes, two tables and chairs, a ceiling fan, fire alarm, balcony to relax and spread clothes, well tiled floors e.t.c. the bathroom and toilet are not in the rooms this time around but they are very clean with running water. They have kitchens with refrigerators and one other room.

Let me cut the story short. University of Ghana is far far far.....better than all our Public and some private Universities in Nigeria in terms of beauty, maintenance culture, facilities e.t.c

I was told that the school is autonomous, and that they always renovates all the structures and facilities at the end of every session.

One thing UG has been able to maintain well are the infrastructure especially the traditional halls built in the 1950s and early 60s.

Volta hall the 3rd hall opened in the 1959-1960 academic year still looks fresh and neat as seen in the pictures below

I remember the first time i went to Ghana and saw a gas station with the sign "open 24 hours", i thought it was a joke. That night, after clubbing we passed the said gas station and the damn thing was still open and the time was 3am. I was amazed. Who born gas station in Nigeria to open pass 8pm.

What makes a university is not mere structure. This is good, but I believe Nigeria still
has something better to offer. first consider the charge in each of these universities.
Moreover, without Nigerian students in these universities, they amount to almost
nothing. Also go and find out the best students in these universities, they are
usually Nigerians on the average.

Nigeria was once that way, even better than Ghana until we discovered oil and greed set into our system. It was then the standard of education and every other sector started falling down. Once upon a time in Nigeria, you'll receive a brand new Peugeot car from government, as soon as you finish university. A friend told me he personally received one in the early 80's.

Now, standard of education have fallen so much that even the new generation of teachers themselves need help as they're also a product of failed education system. Our education have entered a very sad vicious circle, cause bad teachers will always churn out bad students. And the circle continues........ It's a pity!.

If anybody know any angel investor interested in improving education, have them contact me. If I have my way, I will change the way education is conducted, not only in Nigeria but the entire African continent. I'm working on the lecture prototype as I speak.

YEAH this was my Hostel in 2012/2013 session (Vandal City). I so miss Legon.

for those of us who will want to blame our politicians let's first of all start with blaming our VCs. Cos d billion of funds that have bin released over the years thru PTF, TET FUND n others, what have they bin doing wit it. in fact our vice chancellors has contributed immensely to d educational mess we find ourselves in the tertiary institution. They keep looting n diverting funds with impunity coupled with their IGR which they don't remit to FG. after they shift the blame to FG for our educational woes.
