Nigeria’s auto plans can help us, says Nissan SA

BY DAVID FURLONGER, AUGUST 06 2015, 06:59

NIGERIA will have its own motor industry whether South Africa likes it or not, says Nissan SA MD Mike Whitfield. Failure by South Africa to support it will simply open the door for other countries to benefit from the billions of rand of business that will ensue.

Mr Whitfield was responding this week to doubts about the wisdom of South Africa actively helping Nigeria to create an industry that could become a rival. Former SA trade and industry minister Alec Erwin has been advising Nigeria on setting up an industry, using his previous experience in helping to modernise SA’s motor sector.

Nigeria’s automotive policy is based on South Africa’s 1995-2012 motor industry development programme, which Mr Erwin implemented. In an interview on Monday, he said the industries would complement each other, not compete.

Several multinationals have begun building vehicles in Nigeria, and others are waiting in the wings. The companies are all assembling imported kits. Nigerian officials say they hope the industry will begin producing its own components within two years but motor company executives say it is likely to be at least 10 years before the industry starts to become self-sufficient.

Nissan SA is sending kits to Nigeria. NP300 one-ton bakkies are crated in pieces at the Rosslyn plant near Pretoria then shipped to Nigeria, where they are put together. Mr Whitfield said that this year, Nissan SA expected to send "rather more" than the 3,000 vehicles it shipped to Nigeria last year.

Rosslyn, which also produces the NP200 half-ton bakkie, will build about 40,000 vehicles this year — just more than a third of its 110,000 capacity. Mr Whitfield is expected to announce a plan before year-end to close the gap, possibly with an additional vehicle range.

However, he said the Nigerian operation would not diminish Nissan SA’s activities. The African new-vehicle market was expected to grow from 1.4 million vehicles in 2014, to 2.2 million by 2020. If that happened, there would be plenty of opportunity for two Nissan plants.

Nigeria, he said, was always going to get its own motor sector.

Though it had failed to sustain one in the 1980s, circumstances had changed. It was closer than SA to major African population centres and its new-vehicle market was negligible. Analysts say that if new import duties reduce Nigeria’s thriving used-car business, the market for new cars could explode from 40,000 to nearly 1 million.

In many respects, Whitfield said, Nigeria was similar to Brazil, which in a few years had gone from a tiny base to building more than 3 million vehicles annually.

"If, over the next 10 years, the Nigerian auto industry can achieve half as much as Brazil did over the same period, it will be doing very well," he said.

The South African industry, he added, "can’t afford not to be there. If we’re not, someone else will be. If we and Nigeria co-operate, we will develop each other."

If not for our tribal governments; cars has always been manufactured in the East since my childhood, it only took Jonathan to let the world know Nigeria is a car manufacturing country.

But abokys and yolobas ruling this country would not let Nigeria prosper by encouraging this hard working Igbos.

Let them give us biafra biko so we can be our own China.

He did his best for this country but because he is from minority tribe they conspired against him, ethnically, slammed him with all manner of accusations and hounded him out of office.

He is out of office but his programmes and policies are still standing tall, because they were well intentioned and well thought out. Even his enemies now try to lay claim to some of his legacies.

God bless GEJ, the father of Nigeria's democracy and a great ambassador of peace!

Will the vehicles be affordable for civil servants? Hope this is not an industry built on paper? Where in Nigeria is this Nissan plant located? What kind of vehicles are they making? Have they been recruiting?

There is no country or currency where cars are "Cheap", not in the U.S, not even in Japan and definitely not in Nigeria.

Whether for ordinary people or those in the middle class. Average American families earning $35 - 40,000 a year, can't just pull out that money and purchase a Vehicle worth around 20,000 - 35,000 dollars.

The question you should be asking is, do we have proper credit facilities in place which can afford average working Nigerians the opportunity to afford these new cars?

Not the drivel you are spewing up there.

Ford renews interest in assembly plant in Nigeria
September 16, 2014

Contrary to the belief that Ford Motor Company was not interested in setting up an assembly plant in Nigeria under the Federal government's new auto policy, Vanguard Motoring can reveal authoritatively that the company is renewing interest in the nation's automotive sector with the intention of setting up a plant as soon as possible.

Vanguard gathered that Ford Motor's management has been in contract with the National Automotive Council (NAC) on how to come into the country in full force without delay. Several correspondents has been exchange between NAC and Ford in the last one month on the setting up of the plant.

Simonetta Verdi, Director Governmental Affairs I Middle East and Africa, Ford Motor Company will be on Thursday with the officials of Nigeria government in London, led by the Director General of the National Automotive Council, Engineer Aminu Jalal, to discuss and finalise the way forward.

According to Vanguard investigation, Ford is asking for information about some old assembly plants in the country with the aim of partnering with them in setting up assembly lines within their plant.

The company which Ford is showing interest include, PAN Nigeria, ANAMMCO, Leyland Busan, National Truck Manufacturers (NTM), Stallion, and Zahav.

The reason for their inquiries about the already established automobile company, according to my source is that Ford does not want to waste time building a new plant but would like to commence production immediately to establish the brand in Nigeria which is becoming new investors haven.

The source further revealed that of all the auto companies being considered, PAN Nigeria seems to be the most appropriate for what Ford is looking to set up an assembly line because PAN has all the facilities needed for vehicles production.

"With PAN, all the facilities needed to commence production of cars and pickup vans by Ford is on ground, which makes it probably the best choice for what they are looking for. All they need to do is to bring their CKD and commence production immediately," the source told Vanguard.
