Building A Home From The Scratch Or Buying A Finished One? Which Is Better? by Buildertobadt: 12:51pm On Aug 12, 2015
It is the desire of the average responsible Nigerian man (and many women these days) to own a building of their own that will be called home for them and their family. Asides the many issues with renting apartments these days such as inconvenience caused by co-tenants, incessant increase in rent cost and lack of desired privacy, becoming a landlord and owner of a house comes with it's prestige and even viable business opportunity for those with intention own as many houses as they can afford and sell or rent out in due course.

However, the path to becoming a landlord in Nigeria today isn't all that straightforward given the reality involved in the actual process. Besides the fact that building a durable, safe and quality home is a must, a good sense of financial judgement is highly necessary if one doesn't intend going bankrupt in the process of building one's home.

In Nigeria Today, especially in large metropolitan cities like Lagos, Abuja and Portharcourt, the option of buying building properties (or even apartments in some cases) is now common place. This therefore triggers the question in the mind of an intending landlord : '' Do I just buy one of these ready-built houses or build my own from foundation to roof?" . It is obvious that either of both options has it's own advantages in terms of saving time, energy and cost (depending on factors like the intending owner's budget, time at disposal and personal taste), but in the overall view of the subject and from many experiences of the average home owner in Nigeria, which is advisable to the intending home builder to adopt as option?

Opinions, suggestions and comments are welcome from building industry practitioners with experiences to cite as well as from those intending to own their own homes soon.

Thanks for reading, sharing and commenting.

Building is better than buying, cos you're not sure of the materials used. Most especially getting it right from the foundation level.

Very nice article.

They both have their pros and cons. In our environment building seems to be more common as the middle class and lower class consider this a safe route. Building your house allows you to carry out your project in phases and at your own pace. It also gives you the control to ascertain the quality of material being used. You can also easily cut cost when it is necessary.

Buying is mostly done by the upper middle class or upper class as they have more disposable income and dont have to save to build. It also saves cost too; for instance if takes 2 years to build a house then it means you will end up paying 2-years house rent. Whereas buying the house means you can move in immediately and you can have the 2 years house rent as savings. However, with the poor quality of work artisans are known for and frequent collapse of buildings, there is the fear that buying a house is a risk in itself since you dont know the quality of work done during construction.
