THE STORY OF ABOBAKU: AN INTERNET PRANK
TAKEN TOO FAR.
I have seen two pictures making the round on the
Social Media, which some pranksters originated and
which, unfortunately, is trending on the Social Media
as the picture of the Abobaku.
The first picture is the picture of black man being
conferred with Irish citizenship by the Prime
Minister.
The second is an Ugandan warrior.
Did the Yorubas of Ife had an history of Abobaku?
Yes!
But the last Obabaku went with Oba Adelekan, the
Olubuse the first, in 1910.
Internment of Abobaku with the King was outlawed
by the Colonial Administration in 1930 after the
passing of Oba Ademiluyi.
While the Abobaku considered it an honour to die
with the King, the Colonial Authorities thought
otherwise.
The Abobaku sued the Colonial Authorities to Court
for depriving him the honour of being interned with
the King and he lost the suit. He was spared.
The next and 49th Ooni was the former Governor of
the Western Region, Oba Adesoji Aderemi.
Educated and urbane.
The 50th Ooni is the King that just passed on.
Yorubas, know your history!
