In an interview with public commentator, Kayode Ogundamisi, the special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, claimed that the President never promised to make his assets public.

The spokesman said that it was the APC – the president’s party – and not the president himself which declared that he would declare his assets publicly if elected.

Adesina probably did not think about how it might look on Buhari’s reputation to be seen as dragging foot on that cardinal promise of his campaign. Let’s assume for a second that it was the APC which announced that Buhari would declare his assets publicly: Did the president ever object to it at any time? So the party kept using that argument to win votes for him and he never objected for once?

But that assumption is even unnecessary because Buhari actually promised to declare his assets publicly. The public document of his covenants with the Nigerian people stated this clearly: “I believe if Nigeria does not kill corruption; corruption will kill Nigeria. I pledge to: Publicly declare my assets and liabilities and encourage my political appointees to also publicly declare their assets and liabilities.”

Notice that the document did not say “We” or “the APC”, it said “I” – as in, Buhari in the first person. You can see the document HERE.

But Adesina tried to shape a different narrative. He said that Buhari has already done what the law requires by declaring his assets before the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

“You need to get his words right, go and check all that the president said during the campaign, in no place would you see it attributed to him as a person,” Adesina said.

“But then there is a document by his party, the All Progressives Congress, saying he would declare publicly, so we need to set that right, it’s a declaration by his party.

“Now what does the law require? The law requires public officers to declare their assets; he has done that. But his party has a document that says he would do it publicly.

“There is a procedure for that, and the procedure is that you first declare, code of conduct (bureau) would verify and after that, if you want to make it public, the onus lies on you to say release. The procedure has to be followed.”

The presidential spokesman went on to say the decision to release or not release the asset for public consumption would be taken by the president when verification is done.

“He has declared, and it is deposited with the code of conduct bureau and they need to verify. Let’s come to that time when code of conduct would say we have completed verification.”

During the campaigns, Buhari promised to declare his assets within the first 100 days, a promise which was further stated by another of his spokesmen, Garba Shehu, shortly after his inauguration.

What could he be hiding? Make PMB no just try Bobo US. He PMB should come out and directly tell US to our faces that he can't declare his assets.

What is the difference between APC and PMB. He rode on the party manifestoes to become the president and the party made him a president. So, the relationship is like that of an agent and the prinicipal. He is bound by his party acts.

Smh if this is true. This type of yahoo-yahoo that Buhari wants to learn and practice in old age, won't pay him(that is if what Femi Adesina has just said,is correct). But let's give him the benefit of doubt and wait for him to publicly declare his assets.

I fully support Buhari and this government, reason being that if buhari fails in the next four years, then Nigeria has taken many steps backward.

But on this assets declaration thing, he or his party, made the promise and he must fulfil it.

If he doesn't, then we might just start preparing for the next election, post buhari.

Many of us criticised Jonathan for saying 'i don't give a damn' about his public declaration.

We cannot have two kinds of appraisals for the two leaders.

Adesina has been indoctrinated into APC lying cult. A party that cant exist in a day without one propaganda or the other. The party or the presidential candidate, which one? Was it not the same lie Muhammad that said party supremacy is greater than any individual ambition when Saraki defied their party objective not to vie for the Senate Presidency but should rather seed it to Ahmad Lawan. But what Adeshina is actually saying now is that individual stance can be greater than party issuance or directive. One thing about APC is that they think ordinary citizens like me and Nairalanders are fooooools
