Verification Of Buhari, Osinbajo’s Assets Yet To Begin – Code Of Conduct Bureau by Nobody: 7:28am On Aug 17, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice
President Yemi Osinbajo have not commenced
the process of having the Code of Conduct
Bureau verify details of their declared assets,
ahead of making them public, the head of the
bureau has said.
Sam Saba, chairman of the code of conduct
office, said the bureau was prepared to
commence the verification of assets declared
by the president and vice president, but said
CCB was awaiting a convenient time for the
two leaders to carry out the exercise.
The bureau said none of two steps used for
verifying assets has been implemented in the
case of Messrs. Buhari and Osinbajo, nearly
three months since they took office.
“Both the conference and the field verification
exercises are pending,” Mr. Saba said in an
interview with the Punch, published Sunday.
He said a conference verification involves the
examination of the particulars of an asset,
while field verification requires physical
validation of the listed property.
“For instance, if you say you have three
vehicles, let us see the registration numbers.
We don’t have to see all the details. Once we
are able to see the receipt of the purchase of
the vehicle or the registration documents, we
are satisfied,” Mr. Saba said. “But we still
have to see it physically and that is the
second stage which we call field verification.”
The Constitution does not compel office
holders to declare their assets publicly, but
amid an increasing scale of corruption, more
Nigerians have intensified calls for asset
details of senior government officials to be
made open as an important step in combating
graft.
Messrs Buhari and Osinbajo’s election
campaign centred on rooting out corruption,
and the two leaders pledged to voluntarily
declare their assets on assumption of office.
The ruling All Progressives Congress
(opposition before the elections) also assured
that its president – unlike former Peoples
Democratic Party presidents, Goodluck
Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo – would
declare his assets. Umaru Yar’adua, also a
PDP president, declared his assets promptly
on taking office in 2007.
In June, PREMIUM TIMES reported how
President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo
ignored a recommendation of the Ahmed Joda
transition committee that they declare their
assets publicly as they took office.
The committee suggested that a public
declaration of assets would be a “quick win”
for the administration.
Reacting to growing calls for the president to
fulfil his election pledge, his spokesperson,
Garba Shehu, on June 6, assured that Mr.
Buhari would make the report of his asset
declaration public soon after verification by
the Code of Conduct Bureau.
“President Muhammadu Buhari has said that
in fulfilment of one of their campaign
promises, his declared assets and those of
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will be released
to the public upon the completion of their
verification by the Code of Conduct Bureau,”
Mr. Shehu said.
He added: “There is no question at all that the
President and the Vice President are
committed to public declaration of their
assets within the 100 days that they pledged
during the presidential campaign”.
The 100-day period since the new
administration came to power lapses in
September.
The chairman of the Code of Conduct bureau,
Mr. Saba, told Punch that the first step of the
verification will commence once “it is
convenient for Mr. President and his vice for
us to go and do it”. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/188480-verification-of-buhari-osinbajos-assets-yet-to-begin-code-of-conduct-bureau.html

these APC people have destroyed government structures at all level.
How did we descend to this level as a people.
how did i got myself entangled in a country with Almajiris and sophisticated people who see no reason and quite happy to elect a stark illiterate as their ship captain.
the unfortunate thing is that they are in the majority.

I keep asking, what does declaring of asset has to do with leadership? Does it stop our leaders from siphoning and looting our treasuries? Didn't almost all the past govnrs and president declared their assets? Has any of them been thrown into prism after numerous wealth and properties they ve corruptly acquired during their time in office? Or they want to tell us we r fools to accept their monthly salaries and allowances got them those multinaire acquisitions around the world sha? Abeg let's leave this issue of assets declaration and do something meaning and different that will benefit nigerians becos I c no how the declaration of assets by the president or his vice will better the lives of nigerians.

Does it mean that the commission is covering for the monumental scam and fraud our President intends to play Nigerians.

Yar'dua and Jonathan declared their Assets publicly without these pronouncements.

We reject any change to the negative.

Strictly speaking, Nothing! The only problem is that the President and his party promised Nigerians that he will declare his assets publicly. It is a campaign promise which I expect him to fulfill.

I supported the president wholeheartedly and quite frankly, I have zero doubts about his ability and commitment to Transform/Change this country. However, if he cannot HONOR HIS WORD on a minor issue like this, I will begin to have some reservations.

I hope he follows the path of honor and does the right thing. Goodwill can be lost quite easily - just ask GEJ.

This administration is a classic example of Animal Farm. No doubt under the table deal is currently going on between CCB and Buhari to cut down his real net worth before verification begins. So much for change and keeping of promises.

Olisa Metuh was spot on in his assessment of the ruling government's political direction. It has become apparent that PMB's plan is the total degradation and decimation of the various government structures which act as checks and balances to the excesses of the executive
* The infiltration and deformation of the national electoral body
* The hostile takeover of the national security agency
* The flagrant disregard for government processes and protocols
* The calculated media war against the opposition so as to revert the state back to totalitarian rule
Its very apparent that PMB has decided to hijack the future of governance structure in our nation because he believes he will not be able to make a substantial impact in our country and so has put domineering measures in place to check that.

If not that Buhari made that promise to cury favour from the electorates, how does public assest declaration stops anyone from looting. Or even brings good governance aside presenting the person as innocent incorrupt fellow.

With FOI bill anybody can go check the damn assets if he wants. I don't want. What I want is good governance.
This assets declaratin is a distraction.

QED.

My bro u just answered a very vital question. "Nothing" u said so y don't we leave it aside and look out for things that will benefit the poor masses. And u knw that APC always go against all odds, remember they turned down presidential debate whc wud ve given nigerians a good platform to have ask questions and inquired how the APC government tends to run the nation, there was no proper plan on ground for d APC government to run this nation in the first place. I don't knw weather to attribute that to lack of faith in winning the election b4 knowing how dynamic and strong PDP is and I bliv that's d reason we still don't ve minister even up till dis time, d reason y u c forward and backward decisions, slow administrative impart, fluctuations or foreign currencies above the normals, so many more. Had they prepared I don't think all these wud ve been happening by now. Anyways, I still have confident in PMB only if he wud b allowed his duties by d cabers of the country but if he can sustain his integrity I'm sure he will right his name in history stones of this nation. Let's keep praying bro because we deserve more than a better life in dis country. Godbless us all!
