Nasarawa election: Why tribunal may dismiss Maku’s petition
By Umar Muhammad Puma
The chains of event at the Nasarawa State gubernatorial election petition tribunal sitting in Lafia, have clearly shown that Governor Umaru Tanko Al-mukura of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who won the the governorship election as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may once again be victorious against his opponent Labaran Maku of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Maku a former Minister of Information contested the election, amidst controversy, as he was said to have financially induced the leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to deny the authentic candidate of the party, Mr. Ombugaku Mathew the chance test his popularity at the poll.
Mr. Mathew however before the appearance on the scene by Mr. Maku, was the sole and authentic
candidate of the party in Nasarawa State, before the latter was dislodged in a fraudulent way by the former minister who was said to have met all payment of dues and other financial obligations to the party.
Upon losing the best, free and fair election in the history of Nigeria, Maku accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the security agencies of conspiracy in securing victory for Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura by frustrating the voting process, which he claimed denied him the victory in the April 11 gubernatorial polls.
Alleging that Governor Al-Makura’s did not win the election and that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate benefitted from a tainted mandate made possible by what he described as “to collaborate between his party, INEC and soldiers to frustrate the electoral process”.
Key among his allegations was that the collation officers in four wards in Lafia where he was winning had to abandon the collation because soldiers to come in to seize results from returning officers to be presented to INEC.
But an investigation into wards in question revealed that election had actually taken place with no disturbances from any of the security agencies, and that the election at those wards was generally peaceful.
He also alleged that INEC deliberately under-supplied ballot papers in areas that are his stronghold, and he alleged that there were fraudulent cancellations of votes in polling units where he won.
But one thing that is very clear in the minds of the majority of people of Nasarawa State is that the election has actually reflected their choices. For one thing, how can you as a judge reconcile these figures of someone who won 12 out of the 13 LGAs, and polled 309, 746, to defeat his opponent who came a distance second with 178, 983?
Just recently in a press conference in Lafia, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in the state,
Alh. Sidi Ndaji, while answering questions from journalists revealed why his party and its candidate in the April 11th, 2015, governorship election, Yusuf Agabi did not gone to the tribunal to contest the victory of Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura, sayingthe governor had actually won the election.
Ndaji who is the zonal coordinating secretary in the southern senatorial district of the PDP, said that Governor Almakura has actually won his reelection squarely and that the election was free and fair which he said prompted the party and its candidate to jettison any idea of going to the tribunal.
According to him, “we are baffled that the All Progressives Labaran Maku has gone to court when it was obvious that to any observer that Governor Almakura won his election overwhelmingly”.
He said the PDP has decided to respect the wishes and choice of the people because doing anythi g else would amount to questioning the collective resolve of the people which is not only disrespectful but inimical to the growth of democracy.
The PDP chieftain noted that Mr. Maku only won the governorship election in his local government area, Nasarawa Eggon as against APC’s eleven, insiting that APC’s victory in the 2015 election recorded the highest landslide since the inception of democracy in 1999.
“We in the PDP are calling on the electorates not to play into the whims of desperate politicians,” warning that,
“Nasarawa State has endured a turbulent past largely for the same reason and has now come out stronger”

lol i clicked on this thinking i'd find evidence not knowing i was coming to read sentiments. A man who has a good case may yet lose same with bad lawyers and vice versa. If Al Makura won his re-election, then his witnesses would have been bold and proud to declare so on oath in the witness box. Please give us solid evidence of Al Makura winning if you got any. Thanks
