I think he wanted to avoid the "temptation".

There is some evidence that the may have been female apostles:

There were certainly many women disciples - some of whom the Bible tells us were very close to Christ.

But as to the question of sexism? If Jesus did not have any female apostles it's hard to level that accusation at him. In the times and the circumstances in which he lived, women weren't much more than property. The fact that he had female disciples shows that he was more liberal than most of his contemporaries.
