EgunMogaji:No big deal. Required special design from the onset because one can't decided to adopt this method anyhow. It's advantage is actually to reduce the weight if done properly |

segcymoor: That is a combination of in-situ cast foundation cast frame (columns and beam on sloppy terrain) and precast pre stressed rib beam with hollow block former. It had many advantages like 1. Reduce concrete volume. 2. Faster and neater construction 3. Cheaper since less reinforcement is used and waste is reduce. 4. Better strength of slab since the prestress concrete are produced in the factory where better miss design and wet curing can be used |

Hello Egun. In as much as I understand your points, I think you will find that you have more trouble doing something too radical than sticking with the norm. If you wanted to consider solar + 110v, why dont you just have dual as in on grid and then solar as well. At least that's the setup that I know works in the western world, my neighbor has one of those solar panels, he even sells the electricity back to the grid. Ok let me stop there, I know we are not there yet in nija. What happens if your solar panel battery dies or a component and it will take some weeks to get a replacement from USA ? You will also be surprised with the choices of electrical fittings in nija, when I went to buy mine, there were a lot of nice options. It just didnt make financial sense for the deployment purpose, most of the stuff they sell in nija comes from China, most of the electrical fittings they sell in Europe, not sure about USA also comes from China. n3xt:@ bolded, how can that be useless tho. Alot of folks use 110 home appliances here, purchased my TV and home theatre system off Amazon , and one 500w voltage converter took care of that. The "SAFE" use of dual voltage shaver sockets is very limited, the included transformer is designed to cater for very small loads like shavers, clippers etc..... You canno't miss the inscription "for shaver only" usually printed on the box or socket itself. They provide that information for a good reason. |

Ehmm Good people please I need help here (a friend asked....) Can I use raking columns as part of structural frame or are they just architectural components. If possible, how do I approach the design? Thank you. E seun. |

allCopacetic: I believe you understand what I'm implying by saying the 110V devices/gadgets will be useless if the setup is not properly planned. Been an electrical man, you won't see any biggie in having step down transformers in between your device and your mains but not for a novice like me. I dread that setup like hell cos of the kids. There are too many risk with the setup (mismatch, clumsiness, risk of electrical shock etc) even though many people are using it. So, a clearly marked socket is perfect for me. And a simple travel dual voltage converter in critical areas will do it for me. If possible, a step down transformer from the mains to clearly marked 110V sockets in each area of interest will do the magic for me like they do in the multinational companies. What do you think? Bros, there are so many stuffs I see around, and found very useful but choose not to get cos of the need for a step down converter. In my designs, I try as much as possible I eliminate possible point of failures. Clumsy wiring is one of those things I dread so much. I'll rather have a mix of the two voltage planned into my build than to keep buying a transformer every time I have a new 110V device. |

Why don't we just buy gadget with 220? I believe not all USA appliances uses 110v. When u are in Rome.... |

twinskenny: Yes, you're right we should behave as Romans while in Rome. For a build that is owned by a diasporan who's in love in good gadgets and gears, having such a setup that support both won't be a bad idea except you'll be suggesting that the client should get completely new devices that support 220V. And for what reason? Shavers, Clippers, Computers, Game Gears, Mobile Printers etc are personal stuffs you may not need to be buying every time. So a system that supports what you're already used to won't be a bad idea. Me thinks Even if I live in Antartica and I'm building in Nigeria, I still wanna be able to use my 110V mobile printer without extra attachments. Likewise my business allies without having to go haywire looking for an adapter. That's why it is called "Home" in the first place. Simple things cut it for me. 4 Likes |

twinskenny: The only exception are hvac units, clothes dryers, etc The expression of behaving like romans when in Rome is limiting. We have little Saigon, little Tokyo, Chinatown, Russia district here. Clearly those folks want the feel of home. Not trying to convince folks to do 110v, just trying to have a conversation so that I can be more prepared. |

I have many friends and coworkers that are living totally off grid and it's a global move which I'm hoping to become part of. My backup plan is a propane powered generator that will recharges batteries on cloudy days and or supply power to garage lift when in use. Thanks. |

msogunro: Wet curing is what we currently use in Nigeria. It's the current method. He's just saying that the method is still applicable to the aforementioned process. He will explain better. @EgunMogaji In all, a man wants what a man wants. I would av also said you should have a combination of the two but the catch is that you do not plan to use NEPA light AT ALL. And all your household gadgets will be coming from there. |

Ahhhh!. See, Learning has commenced. Like Germans will say, "Geht doch". My thank you goes to everyone who sued for common sense to return where it took a hiatus, and to the gladiators and sparing partners who it appears have sheathed their swords. If I catch anybody wey wan disturb dis peace again heh, him go first Azuh enter market unclad. Oga Mufutau, na lie o, intention denied. Oga you know say we be small pikin. We need you to continue to add stability to the rocking boat. Your contribution to this forum and thread is recognised but if you gotta do this. Anyway, reconsider if you can. @Egunmogaji, I hate the look of those Uk/9ja style sockets as much as you do. Cheap plastic china wares. However, you can pick up decent continental sockets, switches and allied accessoires here for dirt money. All you gotta do is hop on a Lufthansa Airbus on the next home run ( yea, I know Delta and United are direct), and spend a couple of days in frankfurt. A short trip to any one of our Baumarkt eg. Hornbach, Obi, Hagebau and Toom, will make up for your trouble. You'll enjoy our hospitality and the good old German lager beer and Sauerkraut . Let's keep learning gentlemen.

ottersberger: Those look good, very good actually. Unfortunately United, my airline of choice, stopped direct flight to Lagos. Lufthansa is their bed partner so I have no choice but to be cattled through Europe. Again I think I was born a german in a previous life. I've cycled about 20 BMWs through the fleet. Starting from BMW 1600, 2002s, Bavarias, etc and the bikes too. A dearth of Mercedes and Audi but my heart belongs to BMW. One of my bucket list is to pick up a brand new BMW from the factory in Munich and do an european tour. One day |

The other day, during lunch I stumbled upon these guys who were laying what we call interlocking stones, and as I stepped on it, it felt very strong and sturdy, in fact this is what is being used for what we call cobbled streets, they can last for 100's of years with little maintenance. Stopping by, I was very happy since I was planning on using interlock as well, and I stopped by to ask them what the mix ratio was or if they were doing anything special, to my amazement the guy supervising the work said that this is how it comes from China. He said its granite stones that has been cut into those shapes, I could not believe it and the fact that it was coming from China. I also noticed how they did the manholes ets, its metal like it is in most places in the UK, and can be lifted up easily for access. Why dont we have something like this in nija ? Is there anything stopping the use of such ? The breaking of ground or removing interlocking, I dont think belongs to the modern era. I am also curious about the stones, do we have such in Nigeria ? I know we have huge granite deposits in some parts of Nigeria, any reason why we cant have something like this in Nigeria, not imported though. |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Demainman1: 1:31pm On Jul 19, 2016 |
To the importers, can we just import this cobble stones from China just like they do in UK. I'm sure it will be cheaper. Pls, no fake o. |
