Its a really sad development , we pay lip service to wanting quality, but turn arnd and put the quality second place when it's time to take decisions.
How exactly did the client ascertain that the supplier was giving him quality materials ?
Imagine if it ws some quack who couldn't tell the difference , the supplier would have succeeded in creating a false impression, making the person who actually gives the price of good materials look like a thief.
I tell people, if electricity is uninterrupted in this country for 6 months straight, half of the houses in Naija will need to be rewired. The effects of many fake electrical materials are not felt yet because we barely have electricity.
Only principle and the good heart of a few importers and sellers still keep our markets afloat. There is little incentive for selling good stuff in Naija.
Keep up the good work

It's my pet peeve and a laymans opinion that a lot of the household fires that we see are electrical related.

Funny thing is that the Venturi principle tends to indicate that there is a reduced pressure at the intersection accompanied by a higher fluid velocity. So when water gushes out, it's more of a reduced pressure, high velocity than increased pressure, increased velocity. The Venturi principle is what the technique of reducing Cross-sectional area to improve flow is based on.

This will bring the question "are you saying pressure is inversely proportional to velocity?.

Yes (absolutely). The desired increased pressure is just to create a larger pd during flow which increases velocity. Static pressure is the equalised pressure in the system when no flow occurs (velocity=0). flow occurs, coz of a pressure drop across the pressurised tap and the unpressurised part discharging to the environment. According to bernoulli the pd is proportional to velocity head which is the flow we see. The venturri effect upstream adds RAM

(UPDATE:The best would be to run a bigger pipe into a manifold header with buffer e.g. 6" diameter 1meter long pipe @ house entry point for onward distribution. This would eliminate a lot of frictional loses that occur on the walls of the pipe during flow. The next best/most economical would be running something like 2" feeder line from tank to house entry point then reducing it b4 delivery to various consumers. This gives you all the other benefit at the least cost)

This is the only reason I buy well recognized quality cables/wires... I hate electrical problem.
So far, I will only stay with Nigerchin, Coleman, and Kabelmetal.
And I always go directly to their factory to buy it, because I don't know any dealer that I can trust.

And I think there's cost savings in there.

So with Spyders method, everything is straight, plumb and no "pregnancies".

So it will theoretically take less plastering labor and materials.

It's a learning lesson for me.

I don't know and frankly I don't want to know because I'm spoilt.

I haven't had to worry about fake or genuine longer than some sellers have been alive. So instead I take my money to where the government and corporate brand assures me of genuine merchandise.

Government is not the problem, it's individual Nigerians that's the problem.

How do we fix it? I let my money speak for me.

I disagree with you on this boss. I blame the goverment and not individual. Since God created man, He discovered there is a magnet in his heart that attracts evil, for no particular reason. All tribes and races have the tendency to do evil but some environments have consequences of doing evil well spelt out and enforced.
Where I disagree is the fact that the government has got a lot blame here. If you remove the enforcement and sanctions in the western world, their markets too will be flooded with substandard products. I therefore believe that the government in Nigeria needs to work on defining standards and enforcing these on manufacturers and importers. An example is the iron rods market. This was not visited till houses were falling all over the country.
Until recently, the Nigerian markets were flooded with funny looking Iron rods for reinforcement. If you were given a length of Iron Y16 and you were asked to take a guess , you would say it is Y12 because that was what it looked and felt like. Our importers did that magic. There was a clamp down on the market and importers for few weeks and the situation improved a bit.
Therefore, if the government is willing, quality will improve irrespective of what the greedy importer or manufacturer wants.
We can however agree here! who enforces standards on behalf of the government? Individuals!

Sincerely, I would like to be spoilt like you; enter the market and get quality value for my money. It gives me a headache daily knowing I must ask for original everything I enter the market. Imagine.....fake electric cables, fake water self..

I see your point.

The government has a big part to play but we've been waiting for the government since the 60's and things are still screwed up.

There are standards in Nigeria but they are not enforced but that's not stopping the average citizen from following them. My driver was completely shocked when I told him that there were speed limits in Nigeria. I had to make him slow down on Ijebu Ode/Ibadan road until we saw a mile marker so I can show him the speed limit written on it.

I guess I just think we as individuals can effect the change that we want to see.

I still went ahead and bought 250 feet of Romex (I think that should be sufficient for a 2 bedroom). I will keep this your list in case.

Based on your experience, which company in Lagos will you recommend to someone like me when looking to purchase original electrical parts and other building materials like rods? Also what are some tests that I can carry out that would help me tell the difference between quality and fake especially when it comes down to iron rods and blinding wires.

Also for areas in Lagos closer to the ocean ( Ekpe and ibeju environs) with low water table, should considerations be taken as regards to the materials content of iron rods being used for raft foundations? As regards to corrosion

For the Electricals we deliver on that, as long as you're interested in quaity, and you're not looking for impossible prices.
I have almost zero idea, with respect to the rods, i think regular builders in that axis will be able to provide you with better information

You are correct, no company will sell to you even same price they sell to their distributors. They will sell higher so you revert to their distributors, which keeps the supply chain moving smoothly.

@allcopacetic, if you have the picture of a genuine pack of Coleman cables, please share. I think I have some original packs of some Nigerian cables I can snap and share later today. (Cutix, Cometstar) I also love cables which the brand name clearly embedded in the wires so you can avoid imitation from unscrupulous sellers who swap lower quality and re wrap with good name and quality.

Will I look like a mean man if I unwrap one pack and stretch it along the market lines and use my good old tape to measure the length of the wires? grin #saynotofake

(NB. I don't sell wires, I only buy for my various projects and I have some houses I am starting it's wiring soon.)

@Hajj you can see that price of cables is not rriendly these days. People building houses these days believe that services(like Electrical, plumbing and AC) are just minor thing when it comes to building construction. The price I sent to you through whatsapp is still lower than the ones posted above because more discount is given to their major distributor. Price of cables increase almost every month in Nigeria now. God help Nigeria
