[b]A man in Nigeria has reportedly been stabbed repeatedly and burned alive by a mob for stealing soup with his charred remains left outside a secondary school.
The unidentified victim's corpse was left after his death on Sunday in the south-eastern port city of Calabar, the national ThisDay newspaper reported.
The man was one of a group of three who smelt the soup warming in a private residence before dawn, according to Nigerian newspaper ThisDay.
As the three men took the pot from the stove, a woman who was present shouted for assistance and the men were chased by neighbours.
When the man was caught, the mob attacked him with machetes and set him on fire.
ThisDay quoted a local policeman as saying "every suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty".
Vigilantism is a source of debate across Nigeria. In the early 2000s, the government created crime-fighting militias to ease the strain on the country’s thinly stretched federal police force.
The growth of Islamist group, Boko Haram, in the north of the country, has seen the Nigerian military further encourage militias.
