Majority of children under the age of 5 that die each year occur in Africa. Most of these deaths result from infections and malnutrition which are easily preventable and treatable. Over two thirds of deaths occur in the first seven days of life. But just how many children die in this region? – Over 12,000 children daily.

Some of these common diseases that are responsible for the death of children in Africa includes Malaria (a disease transmitted by mosquito carrying a parasite), Polio (a viral infection of the nervous system), Yellow Fever (a virus transmitted most often through the bite of the female Aedes aegypti mosquito), Measles (a viral respiratory infection) and Diarrhea. These could be prevented by creating health awareness and maintaining good personal hygiene.

No access to portable water is a major contribution to children’s poor health in Africa. In some regions, family members may have to walk a far distance to get water for domestic use and in many cases water contaminated. Contaminated water cause Cholera in children. I thought Nigeria is polio free??

The Nigerian government and the people must join hands to fight malaria and cholera, these two are highly preventable.
