Africa and Democracy
After so many years of gaining independence, Democracy as practiced in Africa has been subjected to extensive debate and controversy over the past years. Some say that Democracy is a foreign concept and alien to Africa. Some people believe democracy is imposed on African nations and does not mean the same in the western and in the African context.

Democracy as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary is “a system of government in which all the people of a state or polity … are involved in making decisions about its affairs, typically by voting to elect representatives to a parliament or similar assembly,” Simply, it is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as government of the people, for the people, by the people. And also, according to Larry Diamond, it consists of four key elements:.....
