August 29, was the grand finale of the 2015 World Sango festival, and it took place in the town of oyo, Oyo state, Nigeria. The event was full of spark, magic and acrobatic display by Sango followers from other States and towns as they paid homage to the Alaafin of Oyo. They came from such Nigerian locales as: Oyo, Kabba, Osogbo, Ede, Ibadan, Ilorin, Saki, Owo, Igbope, Akure, Ede, Offa, Igboho, Lokoja, Igbo Ora, Ayete, Lagos, Igarra, Ado Ekiti, Iseyin, Ogbomoso, Ijebu Ode, Saki, Ondo, Abeokuta,Etc and beyond. The Sango festival is the most significant and ancient festival in Oyo, since it is deeply linked to the survival of identity, culture and history of the people. It celebrates the spiritual connection between Sango and the Alaafin. Oyo city was the capital of an empire that dominated a large portion of southwestern Nigeria and further west into Benin and Togo, until it's boundary at the lands of the Akan tribes.. And Shango or Jakuta is a God of Thunder, lightening, fire and Swift Justice who manifests as a warrior-king always wielding a double-edged axe which conveys his Ashe or divine authority & power.

Anyways, here are some photos from the event (watered down version), which was elaborately celebrated, and which attracted tourists from over 42 countries of the world. (According to the organizers)

I don't give a chainsaw what any doofos thinks of our indigenous cultures and their preservation / proliferation...
Personally, these are the kind of events i LOVE attending..... !!!
An African proverb says.... "Like the chameleon, keep one eye on the future, and one eye on the past " i.e, modernize in such a way , that basic elements of your culture are kept intact....ala East Asia.
