Ok... I'm gonna try keeping this short. It's more like a 'prelude to a topic' I hope to share later during the weekend.

Going by current rankings(from various sites) of top doctors to have amassed the highest wealth in the medical field, one or two specialties stand out as 'very lucrative' especially when you run it as private practice.

The truth is I have no interest whatsoever in these specialties because I believe I have a calling into another of medicine's top specialties, Neurosurgery (reputed to be the most difficult, most dreaded, and most highly specialized area of medicine). The truth is I have been in love with the brain since when I was 12 yrs old. I'm currently an on-campus/online junior neurosciences research scholar/resident with an american institution and also a medical student pursuing my second medical degree studies(MB.BS) in Nigeria. First was a B.Sc(medical sciences).

Without further ado, these specialties are PLASTIC SURGERY, AND DERMATOLOGY... With exceptional focus on Plastic and reconstructive surgery(its full name).

The figures are everywhere. I'll try posting them soon enough(if that's necessary).

But it's interesting to know that the world's richest doctor isn't a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist. But of course, specialists in these two fields dominate any riches list in medicine today. In the top 10-top 15, you could find 5 plastic surgeons and 1 or 2 dermatologists. The others would be doctors who amassed fortunes via other means.

Note: This thread is based on Rich list rankings in medicine and private practice involving most of the specialties. However, when it comes to how much a specialist gets paid at tertiary health centers all over the world, then Neurosurgery, orthopedics, cardiology(invasive and non-invasive), etc rank tops.

SO IF I AM TO PICK JUST ONE SPECIALTY IN MEDICINE THAT IS THE WORLD'S MOST LUCRATIVE BASED ON STATISTICS SCATTERED ALL OVER THE INTERNET AND IN JOURNALS WORLDWIDE... It has to be 'PLASTIC SURGERY'.

In Nigeria, Gynaecologists, Psychiatrists, (because of too much worries and thinking), Orthopedics because of so many accidents.

In Nigeria, Obstetrics and Gynecology holds sway cash wise because of the nation's high birth rate and a few other factors.
But the world over, with fashion and 'trying to look like Beyonce', plastic surgeons tend to outshine all others when it comes to customer base.

I think psychiatrists abroad thrive better because of the greater concentration of sociopaths and psychopaths in the western world. *smiles*

As for orthopeds, I wouldn't rank them too high on the rich list (despite this specialty ranking high on highest paid medical jobs) because not all accidents are orthoped-related. In fact, in Nigeria alone, most accidents/emergencies must go through the neurology/neurosurgery unit coz they're neuro-related directly or indirectly. Abroad, it's almost the same statistics when it comes to accidents coz of head injuries, spinal cord injuries, numbness or loss of sensation in certain areas of the body(which may be down to an injury to certain tracts or cortical areas in the brain), etc.
