kilokeys:architects also do a bit of strength of materials when it comes to structures. But civil engineers are not tied to structures alone |

Karence: How did you come about that conclusion? Civil engineering will almost certainly present him/her with a good chance of securing a job on graduation compared to architecture |

Architects do NOT just "design and go home". In fact, they're the first ones in and last ones out. You should do some research and understand the modus operandi of an architect. What he does includes but is not limited to: generation of a design brief, development of schedules of accommodation, concept development and production of preliminary designs, site analysis, feasibility studies, production of working drawings, facilitation of tender process and selection of sellers/contractors, handing over the construction site from client to contractor, approving setting out, site supervision to ensure no structural elements compromise the design (sometimes the impact of columns are only appreciated on site), facilitating the relationship between other consultants, contractors, client and third party; conflict resolution, orchestrating progress to ensure each section happens at the appropriate time; managing variations; scope verification; issuing and endorsing instructions; ascertaining practical completion; conducting site meetings; reviewing the QS' valuations and raising payment certificates; handing over completed building; monitoring defects during the defects liability period... The Architect is the busiest consultant during construction. The structural guys have little to do after roofing, the services engineers come in fully after roofing provided the ducts and sleeves are in place. The quantity surveyors are always relevant but not on site until valuations are needed about once a month. 4 Likes |

naijainfogalery:So architects stay in the office? Come in guys! Who is the consultant architect then? |
Re: Pls Advise: Architecture Or Civil Engineering by redcliff: 1:39pm On Sep 08, 2015 |
ADAMUdaCOWBOY: Well he is probably wrong.. the aec industry has become so integrated that architects these days own the buildings. With the wider use of bim and its technologies, its hard for an architects work to just end at the drawing. They are so relevnt even down to operations and maintenace phase |

Re: Pls Advise: Architecture Or Civil Engineering by alomo85: 1:40pm On Sep 08, 2015 |
As a graduate of Architecture and Building. If I am to advise u, I will say go for civil engineering instead. Civil engineering is broader and not as streamline as architecture. As a civil engineer u are trained to be a structural engineer, steel design engineer, environmental and soil engineer, construction engineer. , you get to use lot of softwares like the architect as well e.g. auto cad, archi cad. If u go to a very good school and finish with a first class, your chances of entering an oil firm is high with civil engineering. To me Architecture is a good course but Civil engineering is better. ......from a guy that has first class info about the 2 courses. Maccoy1: 3 Likes |

Well,I will advice you to follow your passion but let me still point out this points to you 1. Civil Engineering is much more versatile compared to architecture, the truth is the architect is the team leader in a BUILDING CONSTRUCTION, but without you a STRUCTURAL ENGINEER( a branch of civil eng),the architect is all but a dreamer 2• There are other branches of civil eng ( transport eng,Geoinformatics, structure, geothecnical, hydraulics, water resources,Environmental and it goes on), so u av a wide variety of options 3• You will be taught rudiments of architecture in school and with that knowledge u can use any architectural software( autocad, chief architect, revit architecture, tesla BIM etc) 4• And with civil engineering u can easily switch into any oda engineering profession because u get to do more courses dan any engineering student and u will do all other departmental courses more detailed( that's why they call civil eng the mother of all engineering and why some folks refer civil eng to be evil engineering),that means u av to be hardworking to come out with good grades 5• Dere is a disparity in construction feilds, civil engineers hold managerial position more than architects, though I can't say why but it is the truth 6• Any one u choose, make sure u re well grounded with the praticals in the field and that can distinguish you better...Engineers also work in offices that depends on ur role wen u start working 1 Like 1 Share |
