Whenever the vehicle is on idle, eg at hold up or park, the engine is turned OFF to conserve fuel and the Battery powered electric motor takes over the vehicle electronic needs including Air-conditioning. And same motor kick start the gasoline engine afterwards. Switching takes place in split seconds and you the driver won't even notice.

Yes it will function...The Hybrid Batteries Banks which are always located at the vehicle trunk(SUV) or boot(Cars) behind the rear passenger seat; are rechargeable and charging occurs when vehicle is in motion just like your conventional battery under the hood and for hybrid, you can monitor voltage level on your dash indicator. However, nothing is built to last forever, though these set of batteries are more robust and highly effective, it subject to maintenance and possible replacement if need be.
