The new import tariff placed on cars in Nigeria have been highly overwhelming, according to the federal ministry of finance , 70% increase in new cars and 35% on used one’s which is very similar to that of 2013 where we had 70% on both, the former resulting to imported cars currently being sold between N3m and N5m will shoot up to N4.8m and N8m; while tokunbo vehicles selling for N800,000 will rise to N1.28m. while the latter’s price was being sold between N3m and N5m will shoot up to N4.8m and N8m; while tokunbo vehicles selling for N800,000 rose to N1.04m.this is expected to be a burden on the masses and will make it hard for the ordinary citizens to purchase certain cars, a country of over 170million were bulk of its citizens leave below a dollar per day. but looking at the bright side of things, this will lead to creativity in the sector and will enable the federal government to pull the rabbit out of the hat, because the policy will drive indigenous heavy weight in the car manufacturing industry to assert themselves fully.
