Recently, the media was awash with the accusations and counter-accusations between the musical duo of P-square and Soundcity.
Am happy that soundcity spoke up on this bad attitude that has cropped up among our nigerian artistes.
They have developed what is called 'entitlement mentality'. A mentality where they must receive from you because they are artistes.
You will have a nigerian artiste as a longtime friend and maybe you have a party, let's say, your wedding and you extend an invitation to this your longtime friend that has 'blown' and he or she will tell you how much you will have to credit his account with, the specific expensive wines you must serve them, the kind of hotel you must lodge them in(if its outside their state of residence),the number of flight tickets for him and his/her crew etc. Failure to meet the demands, the artiste will not attend your function, regardless of how long you've been friends or the help you may have extended to him in the time past. Note,he's not there to perform but just to grace your occassion like everyother friend of yours.
Recently,a successful industrialist from the south-east was hosting one of the kid's traditional wedding and he had cause to invite a celebrated artistes who's currently making waves on the music scene. The artiste demands were all met which included a first class ticket from Lagos to the east. Incidentally, the industrialist and the artiste were all on the same flight headed to the east. But what baffled me most was that while this artiste sat comfortably in first class, the industrialist and some of his senior management team who went along with him were seated in economy. This is an industrialist who is ranked in the top 5 industrialists and billionaires in Nigeria currently.
Sometime ago,the past administration saw the need to solicit and raise funds to hep rehabilitate the victims of boko-haram. They pleaded with Nigerians to help by opening easy and accessible channels for donations. People from all walks of life including school children sent in donations for these victims. To further raise donations, the government put together a fund raising dinner where business moguls, philantropists, captains of industries gathered and from their business incomes made pledges. At intervals, the moderators and Mc's will make passionate call on the viewers at home to donate. But the saddening thing which most people didn't know was that the artistes who performed that night demanded and collected their millions before performing that night. Am not saying that its wrong to make money with your talent, but for God's sake that night was for a charitable cause which even school kids and poorer folks than them were donating,it wouldn't have hurt if they donated their talent for free as their contribution, but no,not Nigeria's new-breed artistes! They must take!
Sometimes,I put the blame on the corporate bodies and corrupt politicians who have turned them to spoilt brats by splashing them with so much money in the name of endorsement deals.
What P-square did to soundcity is not peculiar to the music duo but has become a common place among our so-called artistes.

Don't blame the sharp Igbo guys for taking advantage of a gullible company. Blame the gullible company. No friends in business. Now SoundCity knows for sure - or I hope.

I get very peeved when i see threads like this filled with bunkum in the name of opinion. One would have expected the op and all his bands of supporters to bring to fore the both side of the issue and then do a critical analysis on an equal scale; sadly their one-wayick perception of life has beclouded that part of their sense...all i see you doing is using an instance that is not even explicit enough to premise your point. I want to ask you a question, if Psqaure and all other Nigerian musicians you are accusing of greed where to become irrelevant in the industry would the so called industrialist and his ilks still mingle with them? Would they even invite them for any event? Take a look at some of Nigerian a-list artist who have all fallen down from mountain olympus, how many of their industrialist friends still mingle with them or still try to be in touch? or how many of them would render a service for them free? The Nigerian music industry is full of deception; friends only stand by you when things are rosy. We must understand that these artist spend million and million of naira on their brand(some borrow this money); and for them to keep maintaining their peak there must be no room for charity in the name of friendship. Also, it is wrong for you to try to portray all Nigerian artists as some individuals who just sit their ass in a spot and then money is thrown at them. These guys work their ass out just to make sure they remain relevant. And the effect of their hard work is what is giving them relevance amongs politicians and people at large. Lastly, you painted a picture that tried to portray all Nigerian artists as insensitive to the plight of the downtrodden...your conclusion is not only flawed but also borne out of stark ignorance...you were not on the same table with the said artist when the event organizers negotiated with them, so you can just draw your conclusion and tag them insensitive. Some of these guys sponsor some of the less privileged to school. It's usually easy to sit in-front of our laptop or have our phones stare at us as we bridle half baked words together in the name of opinion, but if given the opportunity the people we trow stones at have we end up doing far worse than them.
