Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shetima, has called on fellow northern governors to do everything within their power to change the fortune of their region. http://ynaija.com/borno-state-governor-north-change-kashim-shettima-poverty/ Shettima said it was time to change the north, by fighting against poverty, terrorism, division, unemployment and intolerance among the people. He stated this on Friday, during a meeting of the Northern Governors’ Forum, in Kaduna. The governor challenged his colleagues to take advantage of their historic opportunity to change the negative perception of the north as well as improve the lives of their people. He said: “Today, our region has become a thriving nest for war, terrorism, deep seated social divisions, senseless violence, mind-boggling intolerance, injustice, destitution, joblessness and all manner of social vices, the height of which is the madness called Boko Haram. “Things have become so bad, so much that we can say without contradiction that poverty now glaringly wears a bold Northern Face. “We have turned our region into a laughing stock, derided by friends and foes alike, and, without justification, as having dragged the rest of the country down with us. “No amount of lamentation will, of course, solve our problems. We need to act, and fast too. This generation of northern leaders, led by us the governors, have both moral and constitutional responsibility as well as a historic opportunity to reverse the negative fortunes of our people. “We must do everything in our power to restore and entrench the lofty values of unity, understanding, tolerance, mutual respect, empathy, justice and mutual coexistence in the minds of our people and region. “We must firmly and decisively commit ourselves to fighting poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, terrorism and other forms of violent crimes in the north.” |

A problem well stated is a problem half-solved. - Charles Kettering Over the last 16 years out of power, the North experienced a lull in development due to the absence of quality, visionary and responsible leadership which saw the existing challenges brought about by decades of military rule, worsen while everyone played Ostrich. The acknowledgement of these challenges and call to arms by the Northern governors will enable the creation of a developmental roadmap for Arewa which will see her vast agricultural, solid mineral and human resources exploited for her economic benefit through strategic planning and emphasis on education, while attracting FDI by enacting friendly policies and terms amidst an atmosphere of peace and security. |

Jonathan who took the whole blame from you guys has gone, now your eyes have opened to see that the large part of the responsibility lies with you guys. Even shettima now understands not to blame FG for all the security challanges in his state. 8 Likes 3 Shares |

Firefire: Jonathan has gone so he can't take blame anymore, unfortunately the Lord of Duara is unblammable. In feudalism, you only blame the 'kaffirs', when they are absent you blame yourself but never blame the Sultan, Emir or the President if he is from the north. 4 Likes |

This was how the north was in 1995, for those who weren't aware. It's been the complaint by those in the south for half a century now. Quota system has been a total failure if anyone needs proof, the Governor's speech attests to that fact. A southern child with 180 marks can't be admitted into an institution where a southern child with 20marks gets the same admission even with scholarship attached. Now see where it has led. Education Education Education Try these three remedies and see the difference to the region in 2 decades. Oh yes and more truth should be spoken like this also. |

Rawani: Two things I do not get here 1. Do you mean the North should exploit its solid minerals for its own benefit, while oil resource of the south is for everyone? 2. Which human resource? You mean the sheer number of human beings, 95% of whom are productively underwater? What is the quality of the human resource of the North? 3 Likes |
