Why Study Abroad? by higherstudy: 1:28pm On Sep 12, 2015
Knowledge is the best legacy any parent can give his/her child. Good education is something every parent owes their children, and we strive to do that, after all that’s why we work extra and long hours, so that our kids can have the best things in life.
What is the standard of education here in Nigeria? Is it getting better or is it declining? My own personal opinion is, it is declining rapidly. We have come to associate very high tuition fees with good quality education. We have pupils being spoon fed education by people who barely qualify to be pupils themselves. Our nation and way of life has made us blind to the fact that we are been ripped off by the so called private schools and our school curriculum is a joke.
In our universities we rely on theories and we hardly practice what we are taught, making us ill equipped to function in the outside world. This common practice albeit widely practiced in our country is a major setback. We observe lecturers who graduated with second class lower grades been given teaching appointments to teach pupils subjects that they themselves barely passed.(garbage in garbage out)
Don’t kill the messenger!!!!!
Have you noticed that people who are trained or schooled abroad are very opinionated and always stand up for what they believe in, they are trained to depend less on theory but are groomed in the practical way of life, they barely have any short cuts given to them, they are made to follow the due process of things.
Allow me to enumerate some of the benefits of studying abroad:
• SEE THE WORLD: When you study abroad you get to experience the world, a brand new country with brand new outlook, customs and interest and activities, you get to see and experience new terrains, natural wonders, museums and land marks of your host nation. And while there you are not limited to just to the host nation you also get to visit neighboring countries as well.
• EDUCATION: Another reason you might consider studying abroad is for the chance to experience different styles of education. By enrolling in a study abroad program, you’ll have the chance to see a side of your major that you may not have been exposed to at home.
• TAKE IN NEW CULTURES: Many students who choose to study abroad are leaving their home for the first time. When they arrive in their new host country, they are fascinated by the distinct cultural perspectives. When you study abroad you will find incredible new foods, customs, traditions, and social atmospheres.
• GAIN LANGUAGE SKILLS: if you’re planning on studying abroad, one of the major draws is the opportunity to study a foreign language. Studying abroad grants you the opportunity to completely immerse yourself in a new language, and there is no better way to learn than to dive right in.
• CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: When you finish your study abroad program and return home, you will return with a new perspective on culture, language skills, a great education, and a willingness to learn. Needless to say, all of these are very attractive to future employers. Many students find that they love their host country so much that they decide to seek work there. If you can relate, you will find that a local education will be very valuable when searching for a potential job in that country.
• FIND NEW INTREST: You should know that studying in a different country offers many new activities and interests that you may never have discovered if you’d stayed at home. You might find that you have an as-yet undiscovered talent for hiking, water sports, snow skiing, golf, or various other new sports you may never have tried back home.
• PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: There is nothing quite like being on your own in a foreign country. You might find that studying abroad really brings out your independent nature. Students who study abroad become explorers of their new nation and really discover the curiosity and excitement that they harbor. A benefit to studying abroad is the opportunity to discover who you really are, while gaining an understanding of a different culture. Being in a new place by yourself can be overwhelming at times, and it tests your ability to adapt to diverse situations while being able to problem solve
Am not here to compare the different ways of life, my motive is to let you know that you stand to benefit a lot from schooling abroad than in our beloved country Nigeria.
You have access to a whole lot of research materials and your lecturers are always on hand to help you when you run into difficulties. The rich know this that is why they send their wards to schools outside our shores.
I am happy that today schooling abroad has been made more accessible to the masses, and the tuition's are not as expensive as previously believed.
