Cristiano Ronaldo tops Player Power
Rankings ahead of Steven Naismith
September 14, 2015 6:34:10 AM PDT
By ESPN staff
Each week, ESPN FC's worldwide editorial
desks nominate their top 10 performers
from the weekend action, and the results
are collated into a final Player Power
Rankings countdown.
Let us know what you think of the
countdown by commenting below or on
Twitter using #ESPNFCrankings.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
What goal drought? After two -- yes, two! --
games without a goal, questions were
asked of the Portuguese striker. Five goals
against Espanyol later, there are no further
questions. The "doubts" were all a bit
tongue in cheek, of course, but knowing
Ronaldo, he was probably a bit concerned
himself and will be pleased that normal
service has been resumed.
2. Steven Naismith (Everton)
We'll admit it, we didn't expect an Everton
substitute to figure this high in the Power
Rankings, possibly ever. But how can
Naismith be left out after a quite remarkable
performance vs. Chelsea? Two days before
his 29th birthday, the Scot scored with both
feet and his head -- a "perfect hat trick."
Many happy returns indeed!
3. Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain)
PSG dropped points for the first time in
Ligue 1 this season, but through no fault of
Cavani, who scored twice to take his tally
this season to four goals in five games. With
Zlatan Ibrahimovic working his way back to
full fitness, the Uruguayan has stepped up.
Cavani leads PSG in shots with 20 -- no other
player is in double figures.
4. Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
So, who do you think had more of a
sleepless night on Friday -- Lionel Messi after
the birth of his second son, or Atletico
Madrid's defenders ahead of facing the
four-time Ballon d'Or winner? At the
Calderon, Messi was kept on the bench for
an hour before coming on to score
Barcelona's winner. Oh, baby!
5. Alexander Meier (Eintracht Frankfurt)
He won the Bundesliga top scorer award
last season so it shouldn't be a huge
surprise that Meier is in form again, but
nevertheless, whenever a 32-year-old nets a
hat trick, it is a notable achievement. That
Meier's treble came in his first game of the
season is also noteworthy, as is his recent
record vs. Cologne: seven goals in his last
three games!
6. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia
Dortmund)
Dortmund marched on with their fourth
straight win and Aubameyang was a key
reason why, netting two penalties to take
his goal tally for the young Bundesliga
season to five. At this rate, he will
comfortably eclipse last season's total of 16
and, who knows, he might just be the
catalyst for a title push by his club.
7. Anthony Martial (Manchester United)
When you're just 19 and, with a huge
transfer fee on your back, have moved to a
new country and trained less than a handful
of times with your new team, you could be
forgiven for making a quiet debut. Not so
for Martial, who announced himself to the
Old Trafford faithful with a superb goal vs.
Liverpool.
8. Fredy Guarin (Inter)
The Milan derby might not have as much
riding on it in terms of impact at the top of
the Serie A standings, but it remains one of
the biggest games in world football.
Therefore, you can imagine just how
popular Guarin is with Inter fans after his
superb goal settled Sunday's encounter at
the San Siro.
9. Luuk De Jong (PSV Eindhoven)
After scoring just eight times in 49 games
for Borussia Monchengladbach and none in
12 for Newcastle, De Jong has found his
touch since joining PSV. The striker netted
26 in all competitions last season and
already has seven in 2015-16, including the
first-half hat trick he grabbed on Saturday at
Cambuur Leeuwarden.
10. Aritz Aduriz (Athletic Bilbao)
Aduriz was a Power Rankings Player of the
Week back in August after scoring a hat
trick vs. Barcelona, and he makes this
week's countdown after a two-goal display
in a 3-1 win vs. Getafe. It's a sign of how
strong Spain have been for so long that he
has only one cap, but could his current form
lead to a national team recall?
