The embattled National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Wednesday bowed to pressure and finally resigned his position after months of intrigues and political maneuvering. It is reported that Tukur has tendered his letter of resignation to President Goodluck Jonathan, who is expected to read the letter to members of the National Caucus when they reconvene at 6 pm.
It was reported yesterday that the stubborn Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman who has been accused of being the PDP problem has agreed to go as the party’s Chairman, but in a statement by his media aide, Oliver Okpala, in Abuja later on Tuesday, Mr. Tukur said he has not resigned and has no plan to resign his position.
Multiple sources within the Presidency and the PDP revealed to us yesterday that President Goodluck Jonathan who would have wanted him to stay called him to the Aso Villa and told him of plans by the party National Working Committee (NWC) to pass a vote of no confidence on him on Thursday, January 16th.
Mr Jonathan we gathered pleaded with him to save face by tendering his resignation letter, with the promise of a political position. Mr Tukur who had no choice thanked the President for standing by him during the storm and gave him his word to tender his resignation letter, stated our sources.
We gathered that he went to the Wadata Plaza in Wuse 5, Abuja where he drafted a three paragraph resignation letter dated 15th January 2014, but will take effect from January 16th after the Armed forces remembrance day. Part of the agreement reached in the course of their meeting is that the outgoing PDP Chairman will have a hand in the selection of who replaces him, confirmed a source.
With Wednesday’s confirmed resignation, Tukur has escaped being suspended from the party by the members of the NWC if he had refused to resign.
Tukur was to be suspended by about eight members of the NWC, while the National Executive Committee of the party would ratify his suspension on Thursday.
